A good year for parcels

In spite of the slowdown in the economy, GEE’s domestic parcel service managed to keep its growth rates constant in the last quarter, and its international service even exceeded the growth forecasts. The more recently launched services saw more rapid growth than the more traditional business segments. This was particularly evident in the case of shipments to the Canary Islands, ecommerce customers and Integral Logistics. There was a considerable increase in freight shipments to the Canary Islands with the introduction of several options. This was a response to customer requirements regarding delivery: sea options with
weekly shipments from Cadiz, and air service with daily flights from Madrid. In 2001 the new Tenerife and Lanzarote installations were opened which, together with the Las Palmas depot, guarantee full coverage of the Canary Islands.
The logistics warehouses in Vitoria, Madrid and Valladolid provide integral services to several companies who have opted for outsourcing in this area. These companies have handed over management of their logistics chain to Guipuzcoana Euro Express. All phases of processing are covered; from the time the items enter the warehouse to final delivery. Guipuzcoana Euro Express handled a total of 14.4 million shipments in 2001, which amounts to a volume of 39 million parcels, as compared with 13.3 million in 2000.
All of this is possible thanks to over 4,400 employees and a fleet of almost 2,160 vehicles. The 85 hubs and depots throughout Spain and Portugal and on the islands are part of a well planned network which makes 24 and 48-hour delivery possible.
In 2001 new plants in Albacete, Huelva, Alcoy, Lugo, Coimbra (Portugal) and San Sebastian were opened. This last plant is fully automated.
