Lost post a major complaint

SCOTLAND’S new postal watchdog received 1163 complaints from the public about the mail service in its inaugural year.

The first annual report from Postwatch Scotland revealed that the majority of complaints were about letters and parcels lost in the post or that did not turn up on time.

The good news is that Postwatch Scotland was able to secure (pounds) 33,000 in compensation for a number of Consignia’s customers.

Postwatch Scotland also managed to restore six-day delivery to some areas.

Tom Begg, chairman of Postwatch Scotland, said: “Our most urgent task during the year was to establish an efficient complaints service.”

As yesterday’s report was released, Consignia said it was too early to dismiss a controversial scheme to charge householders and small businesses to have their post delivered by 9am amid reports that only one person has signed up to it.

The company has been testing trial charges of (pounds) 5, (pounds) 10, or (pounds) 14 a week for post to be delivered before 9am in 14 areas around the country since July 15.
