Competition on the Dutch mail market formalised
Today sees the official start of operations by Selekt Mail Nederland. At the beginning of July this year, shareholders Deutsche Post and Dutch publisher Wegener announced plans to found a joint venture.
They were merging the addressed mail services provided by both companies at that time. The competition authorities have now given their approval and Selekt Mail Nederland is now able to start fulfilling its ambitions.
The transaction announced in July was formally finalised on 1 November 2002. The agreement gives Deutsche Post a majority interest of 70% in Interlanden BV (distributor of unaddressed promotional material and free house‑to‑house newspapers). Wegener NV continues to retain a minority interest (30%) in Interlanden BV. The shareholding structure in Selekt Mail Nederland (addressed mail) has finally been established at 51% for Deutsche Post and 49% for Wegener.
The mail delivery service, Selekt Mail Nederland, is now the second largest postal company in the Netherlands after TPG Post. The company now plans to make significant inroads into the Dutch mail market by providing more flexibility on the market. At a congress organised by OPTA, the independent post and telecommunications authority, Peter Nientker explained the strategy of Selekt Mail Nederland.
