UPS Chairman appointed to US President's Export Council
Mike Eskew, the chairman and CEO of United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS), today was sworn in by President George W. Bush to the President’s Export Council.
“The President’s Export Council is the premier national advisory committee on international trade, and I know Mike Eskew will have a positive impact in his advisory role to the President,” stated Commerce Secretary Don Evans. “Twelve million American jobs depend on exports of goods and services. The President’s economic growth plan has set the course for a stronger economy that underscores the importance of trade to America’s economic growth and prosperity.”
“UPS supports the removal of international trade barriers through free trade initiatives,” said Eskew, who joined the panel after a White House ceremony. “For example, UPS supported the recent passage of Trade Promotion Authority and is a co-chair of both the Chile and Singapore Free Trade Business Coalitions, which will seek passage of free trade agreements in those countries later this year.”
As the top advisory committee on global trade, the President’s Export Council advises the President on government policies and programs that affect U.S. trade performance while providing a forum for discussing and resolving trade-related problems among the business, industrial, agricultural, labor and government sectors.
Eskew’s induction recognizes the importance of the express delivery industry to the nation’s economy and in facilitating global trade.
“We’re in business to make our customers successful and to the extent we can make it easier to conduct global commerce, both our customers and our own business will benefit,” stated Eskew. “For every 40 new international packages that we deliver each day, one UPS job will be created in the U.S.”
