Rakuten and Japan Post working together to reduce need for redeliveries

Rakuten and Japan Post have announced that they are working together on new measures to reduce the need for redeliveries of e-commerce parcels. The two companies have already established a partnership which allows shoppers buying online with Rakuten to pick up their parcels from Hako Post lockers.

In a statement issued on Wednesday (5 April), Rakuten said that they are now “studying the provision of and policies for a last mile delivery service that allows users of e-commerce services to have products delivered once with certainty, without worrying about missing a delivery”.

The proposals being considered include:

  • expanding parcel pick up locations (throughconvenience stores, post offices, HAKO POST, and Rakuten Box)
  • implementing designated pick-up locations
  • expanding notification services
  • awarding Rakuten Super Points when parcels are picked up the first time.

To promote these measures, Rakuten and Japan Post are working together to offer special delivery fees for purchases made with Rakuten Ichiba merchants.
