Where will Amazon HQ2 be located?

Speculation has been growing regarding the likely location for “Amazon HQ2”, the online giant’s second company headquarters in North America. In a statement issued last week, Amazon said that HQ2 will be “the full equal” to existing headquarters in Seattle.

The company expects to invest over $5bn in construction and to grow HQ2 to “include as many as 50,000 high-paying jobs”.

Amazon added that it was opening the Amazon HQ2 Request for Proposal (“RFP”) – and local and state government leaders interested in learning more about how they can bring Amazon to their community can visit www.amazon.com/amazonHQ2.

Amazon said that in choosing the location for HQ2, it has a “preference” for:

  • Metropolitan areas with more than one million people
  • A stable and business-friendly environment
  • Urban or suburban locations with the potential to attract and retain strong technical talent
  • Communities that think big and creatively when considering locations and real estate options.

A number of media outlets have sized up the relative merits of different US cities based on these criteria. But there has also been speculation that Amazon may consider a city in Canada or Mexico.
