Amazon launching “Key” service in US

Amazon has launched a new service, called Amazon Key, which allows customers to grant access to their homes to delivery personnel and service providers. The Amazon Key package includes an app, a smart lock and the “Amazon Cloud Cam”, an intelligent indoor security camera.

Using the Amazon Key app, Amazon Prime customers can track their delivery with real-time notifications, watch the delivery happening live (via the Cloud Cam) or review a video of the delivery after it is complete.

In a statement issued yesterday (25 October), Amazon said: “Amazon Key works with Same-Day, One-Day, Two-Day and Standard Shipping. Once set-up is complete, receiving in-home delivery is as simple as a click: customers select “in-home” while shopping and Amazon handles the rest. No passcodes, no fuss.”

The Amazon Key service will be available from 8 November in 37 major US cities, with “more locations rolling out over time”. The 37 cities are the areas where Amazon Logistics handles the drop-off.

This is not a cheap service: prices for the Amazon Key In-Home Kit start at $249.99.
