More Franchises for Amtrak

Amtrak Express Parcels has brought operations for the Newcastle are in-house- but is seeking to franchise in other areas where it runs its own operation. The firm has earmarked Brighton, Canterbury, Tunbridge Wells, Colchester/Chelmsford, Cambridge and Walsall/Dudley as areas for franchising.
Sharron O’Hanlon, Amtrak franchise manager, says: “We have actually been running operations ourselves but we prefer to franchise if we feel there is a good potential for expansion. Franchise holders can use local knowledge and contacts and run a tighter ship because it’s their own money.”
Three months ago, Amtrak franchised one of tits largest areas, Southampton/Portsmouth, to Riva South.
But the Franchisees do not necessarily have to have transport experience, O’Hanlon says. They do need senior management experience, flair to develop new business and good people management skills.
The network is currently 90-strong and has seen string growth in home delivery. Contract wins include those with Comet, Laura Ashley and Virgin Wines.
