DHL takes over Scandinavian SAS cargo operations

International express and logistics company DHL will take over part of the operations of Scandinavian air cargo carrier SAS Cargo, part of Scandinavian airline SAS Group, it was reported on September 28, 2005.

The move concerns SAS Cargo’s loading and unloading operations of Korean Air’s cargo flights. The operations take place at Danish Kastrup Airport, near Copenhagen, and the cargo is then transported by trucks to the rest of the Nordic region.

Korean Air was attracted as a result of the partnership between DHL and Kastrup Airport. DHL expects to attract also other customers of this type soon, the managing director of the company’s Danish unit, DHL Aviation Denmark, said. The move is part of DHL’s strategy to offer its unused capacity on the market, and DHL implements this strategy also in the UK and Spain, the director added.

The cargo operations of Korean Air at Kastrup airport generate a turnover of some 35 mln Danish crowns ($5.6 mln/4.7 mln euro) a year. The cargo will be delivered on a weekly basis by Korean Air, using an aircraft of the type Boeing B-747, which is the largest cargo aircraft worldwide.
