City Link invest in new fleet

City Link is driving efficiency with a new national fleet as part of a multi-million pound investment in the UK. The company has put 80 curtain-sided vehicles into operation from its Coventry Hub, cutting 30 minutes off its hub operation time. City Link previously operated with hard-sided vehicles but the new fleet will help the company streamline its operation.

City Link’s plan has taken just five weeks to roll out after a year of intensive planning and also sees 50 new forklift trucks being introduced into the operation to load pallet cages on vehicles rather than the use of roll cages.

The company handles over 350,000 parcels each night – 150,000 in the Coventry Hub and around 200,000 at its Hub in Wednesbury.

Stuart Godman, City Link’s managing director said: “Our investment in the new fleet has improved productivity and helped us operate far more efficiently – a benefit we have been able to pass on to our Customers.

“Coventry plays a crucial role in our UK network and the fleet is just one part of our ongoing investment programme. The Company has also returned to the “one depot, one general manager” business model which has created 20 new general manager posts this year.”

City Link is also expanding its depot footprint by 20% from 2.5m square feet to 3m square feet.

Godman added: “Our investment plans will enable us to handle even greater volumes and continue our excellent performance levels whilst delivering the great service our Customers deserve.”

City Link employs 5,500 people throughout the UK operating 3,000 vehicles from a network of over 85 depots handling approximately 350,000 parcels daily.
