Spring awarded international mailing contract by UK government

Spring Global Mail has been chosen by the UK government to provide international mail services. The deal – issued by The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) – is renewable for up to 4 years.

The new contract was the result of “a comprehensive tendering and appraisal procedure which invited all international mail suppliers approved under the Buying Solutions Framework Agreement to tender for DWP requirements”.

The DWP is responsible for welfare and pension policy in the UK.

It is the biggest public service delivery department in the country, serving more than 20m customers.

Earlier this month, the DWP received criticism after announcing that Citibank will provide a new ‘over-the-counter’ service at PayPoint outlets from 2012, in a contract that is worth around £20m a year.

The contract was previously held by Post Office Ltd.

The National Federation of SubPostmasters (NFSP) described the news as “bitterly disappointing”, whilst the Communication Workers Union (CWU) labelled the move as a “betrayal of Britain’s most vulnerable”.
