PostNord to acquire Finnish parcel company

Scandinavian postal operator PostNord is set to buy a parcel and logistics company based in Finland. The parent company of Sweden Post and Post Danmark said on Friday that it has agreed a deal to acquire Uudenmaan Pikakuljetus (UPK) from Danish logistics giant DSV.

The deal is expected to expand PostNord’s business in Finland by a third.

UPK has 60 employees and operations across Finland. Last year the company had a turnover of EUR 24m.

PostNord said the acquisition would strengthen its domestic express parcel services and e-commerce logistics in Finland, but also its healthcare and temperature-controlled logistics services.

The deal remains subject to approval by the Finish Competition and Consumer Authority, but PostNord said it expects the deal to be fully concluded by the beginning of September.

Jari Rinnekoski, chief executive of PostNord Oy, the Group’s Finnish business, said: “UPK’s and PostNord’s operations, terminals and transport networks complement one another perfectly.

“This will allow for effective increase of transport volumes, thus also improving delivery reliability. This, in turn, lays a solid foundation on which to further increase our business operations. The acquisition is also a demonstration of the PostNord strategy to strengthen its position in Finland.”

Rinnekoski said the growth in volume from the acquisition should help to improve his firm’s competitiveness and allow a higher quality and more comprehensive range of services.

PostNord as a whole has 38,000 employees in its Group, generating SEK 40bn (EUR 4.33bn) revenue in 2014.
