Botswana regulator calls for more regional collaboration among postal operators

The Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority’s deputy chief executive officer, Mphoeng Tamasiga, has called on postal operators in Southern Africa to work together on innovative new ways to generate new business. Speaking at the 14th annual general meeting of the Southern African Postal Operators Association (SAPOA), Tamasiga said: “We can no longer conduct ourselves and our institutions as if it is business as usual.”

Tamasiga said that the Botswana authorities were looking to promote collaboration through the ICT Inter-Ministerial and Inter-Governmental framework of cooperation.

Also speaking at the conference Cecilia Mamelodi-Onyadile of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) secretariat, agreed that regional collaboration was vital – and went on to say that work was being done on an “effective, harmonised SADC postal policy”.

“The implementation of the SADC Postal Strategy is on track and will lead to studies on the postal financial inclusion guidelines for SADC and framework for postal goods and services in SADC,” said Mamelodi-Onyadile.
