Kiwibank helps NZ Post deliver 34m dollars

New Zealand Post made 34.7 million dollars after tax in the six months to December, largely as a result of rapid growth at Kiwibank. The result compared with a net profit of 40.4 million dollars in the 2004 half year, which was boosted by a 6 million dollars gain from the sale of the Christchurch Mail Centre. New Zealand Post now reports only half of its express freight business figures, having sold 50 per cent to DHL in a joint venture. “Given that, and given the challenges there are in our core business over the half year, the performance and the result are very encouraging,” chief executive John Allen said. The result was driven by Kiwibank — which contributed a 5.4 million dollars profit – as well as by payment services and international mail.

Reich predicts TNT sale flop

Dirk Reich of Kuehne & Nagel has predicted that TNT will fail to sell its Logistics division as a whole. There is little interest from trade buyers; investment sponsors are showing high levels of interest at present but they won’t, in the end, meet TNT’s price expectations, he says. TNT will then be forced to sell off the parts in pieces, with value depending on the speed of the process. Reich said that he thought there was a done deal between TNT and UPS, especially after the disposal of the French operations; but that was before TNT Logistics was advertised for sale. Reich said K&N would be interested only in elements in the Far East and in South America and he ruled out buying the strong UK or Italy units.

US Postal Service 'mailing online' goes global

USPS customers using NetPost’s Mailing Online now can send mail internationally. Mailing Online, a printing and mailing service, combines the speed of the Internet with the effectiveness of traditional mail. Mailing Online offers an array of printing and mailing options to customize orders including printing, folding, inserting, addressing, and applying the postage to each piece. This year, the US Postal Service expanded delivery options for Mailing Online to include international addresses. Delivery had been limited to domestic addresses. Customers now only have to add a “country field” to their address lists before submitting the final mail piece and complete address database.

“Many small business owners are expanding into foreign markets or offering products overseas. Giving customers the option of sending the direct mail pieces they create through Mailing Online overseas is one more way the Postal Service is responding to the needs of our customers,” said Nick Barranca, Vice President, Product Development.

PPA wins Postcomm price dispute

The PPA has won its battle with Postcomm over price controls for magazine delivery service Presstream. Postal regulator Postcomm is to keep the second-class system, Presstream 2, within price controls for a further four years. The removal of Presstream 2 would have significantly increased publishing costs and filtered down to printers, negatively impacting paginations and run lengths.
“This decision enables all subscription orientated magazine publishers to breathe a collective sigh of relief,” said PPA chief executive Ian Locks.
