Work This Way: FedEx Making a Difference at Work

The work FedEx is doing in the communities it serves is recognized in a new book encouraging companies to act responsibly.

The book, written by Tim Sanders, is called “Saving the World at Work – What Companies and Individuals Can Do to Go Beyond Making a Profit to Making a Difference.”

The author calls FedEx a “quality-centered” company, noting how FedEx won the first Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for service in 1990, due in large part to founder and CEO Fred Smith’s commitment to cutting-edge information technology to ensure reliability.

The book goes on to showcase how thousands of FedEx employees volunteer to provide safety expertise during International Walk to School Day each October, and how those FedEx efforts have helped expand the program internationally.

GLS invests in French network expansion

GLS has opened a larger new depot at Gennevilliers, north of Paris, as part of EUR 10 million worth of investment in its French network this year.

Located close to the nearby port, the 5,000 sqm depot has 60 docking doors gates and a large sorting area. It is equipped with state-of-the art conveyor systems able to increase sorting capacity up to 7,500 inbound shipments and up to 9,000 outbound shipments an hour and thus improving the company’s productivity considerably, GLS France said.

Separately, GLS France has invested about EUR 2 million in the modernisation of the sorting systems in its depots in Roissy and Fleury to cope with peaks in business activity that can increase up to 20 pct on certain days, thus responding to growing customer needs in terms of flexibility and reliability. Capacity at Roissy will go up from 5,000 to 7,000 parcels per hour.

In Europe, some other major investments are planned such as the construction of new depots in Stuttgart, Germany, and Zirl, Austria as well as the expansion of the existing sites in Neustadt-Glewe and Leipzig, Germany, and in Czeladz, Zielona Góra and Wroclaw in Poland, GLS France noted.

In addition to this investment in production equipment, GLS also aims at optimising its information systems to further strengthen parcel security and tracking transparency.

Postal services 'suffer technology gap'

Tanzania postal services can be improved more if modern means of communication are applied, Postmaster General Deos Mndeme has said.

Speaking during the anniversary of the World Post Day, Mr Mndeme said that Tanzania Posts Corporation revenue has been rising and its current level is Sh. 20 billion.

Letters sent through the post office inside and outside the country reach 26 million yearly and that the number was rising yearly, he said.
“Post Office services are still needed in Tanzania although there is great competition from more recent means of communication.

The government needs to establish the use of mobile phones in the Post Office in order to widen those services,” he further noted. The government is on the process of buying out Post Office debts so that the corporation loses weight and resumes a competitive conduct of service provision.

Presenting his speech on behalf of Deputy Minister for Communication, Science and Technology Dr Maua Daftari, the Permanent Secretary Dr Naomi Katunzi said that currently the postal network of Public Postal Operator consists 400 postal outlets.

DuPont Safety Award for Deutsche Post World Net (Germany)

Deutsche Post World Net has been given the DuPont Safety Award 2008 in the Innovative Approach category.
The global leader in logistics received the award for its Group-wide traffic safety initiative Global Road Safety. This follows a similar award by DuPont to Deutsche Post in 2003 for an internal safety programme.
Every day, thousands of Deutsche Post employees are on the move on roads all around the world – in cars and lorries, on bicycles or on foot. Last year, in order to raise awareness of the varied challenges and the potential hazards associated with road traffic, the company launched its Global Road Safety initiative.
At the heart of this safety initiative is the Deutsche Post World Net Road Safety Code – a list of seven simple but effective rules of the road.
The Global Road Safety initiative is not intended to be a prescriptive list of dos and don’ts – instead it aims to persuade the employees, motivating them to behave more safely when they are on the roads.

International express fuel surcharges drop as oil prices decline

DHL, FedEx, UPS and TNT have significantly reduced their fuel surcharges for international air express shipments around the world this month against a background of a continued sharp fall in oil prices largely driven by the escalating global financial crisis, CEP-Research analysis shows.

Oil prices have declined sharply from a peak of nearly USD 150 a barrel in July to below USD 85 a barrel this week on the various trading exchanges. In September, the integrator’s fuel surcharges were largely stable and did not fully reflect the downward trend. This is because the four leading express carriers calculate their surcharges based on indexes showing the previous month’s oil price level and announce them in advance for the following month, thus resulting in a two-month time lag between prices and surcharge level.

In October, however, surcharges show a clearly recognisable drop around the globe, with the biggest reductions in the USA, significant falls in Asia and moderate reductions in Europe.
