Village hall is repackaged as Post Office
A VILLAGE hall in the Westcountry has been transformed into a local post office following the closure of the vital service nine months ago.
Porkellis Post Office in Helston has been closed since last August and like many rural post offices it struggled to find suitable premises to begin operating from again.
Porkellis village hall committee worked together with a Rural Transfer Adviser from Consignia over the last eight months to organise the relocation of the post office.
It will now be run as a satellite service from the village hall three mornings a week by sub-postmaster Jeff Hobden, who currently runs the nearby Rame Cross post office.
Consignia rival's reform alert
ONE OF Consignia’s main rivals has urged a slowdown in postal liberalisation, saying that Consignia is too weak for full competition before the rest of Europe and that competitors will not be big enough to pick up the pieces when it struggles.
TPG, which operates the Dutch post office and which has held merger talks with Consignia, has asked the postal regulator to delay the opening of the full market to competition and to change the way liberalisation is phased in.
SingTel yet to decide on SingPost listing
SINGTEL has invited investment bankers to submit proposals on listing its subsidiary Singapore Post (SingPost), among other options, but no decision has yet been made.
In a statement to the Singapore Exchange (SGX), SingTel said that it had, on an ongoing basis, carried out strategic reviews of its subsidiaries.
These included SingPost which is involved in postal, telecom and agency services.
‘There are ongoing discussions with investment bankers on the various options. However, no decision has been made,’ said SingTel.
It said it would make an announcement ‘when appropriate’.
Post office may acquire NZ courier
Australia Post has emerged as frontrunner to buy Ausdoc’s $NZ200million ($167.2 million) New Zealand courier and express freight business Freightways Express Ltd, in a move that would signal an Australasian expansion strategy by the postal giant.
Ausdoc, a document logistics group, announced on Tuesday that it was in exclusive negotiations to sell the New Zealand business as part of a break-up strategy.
Ausdoc said a binding sales agreement would be reached in the next fortnight.
Mail review not threat to north remote areas
POSTCOMM denied last night a proposed consultation exercise on deliveries in geographically remote areas will ease pressure on the Royal Mail to maintain deliveries across the North.
A spokesman confirmed the intention is to seek as wide a reaction as possible to a review of existing exemptions from the requirement for daily collections and deliveries under the Universal Obligation.
He spoke out following the release of a list of existing exemptions, such as deliveries to 60 homes in the Scoraig Peninsula in Loch Broom, via the community boat which only sails on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Nigeria now has a new Nipost
Postmaster-General, Abubakar Argungu, has said that NIPOST has been transformed into an efficient and effective mail delivery organisation. Argungu, who spoke recently in Enugu during a visit to Governor Chimaroke Nnamani, said that “Nigeria now has a new NIPOST.” The postmaster-general further said that the establishment had been turned around “which is one of the dividends of democracy.”
