Deutsche Post AG, the German postal service provider, has announced plans to invest 2.5bn euros in it global IT network in this year. It believes it will be able to make potential savings of around 20 per cent.
The worldwide network will be managed by a subsidiary company, IT Solutions, with a staff of 1200.
Within the scope of an alliance between French La Poste and Fedex Express the US mail services company will carry postal consignments of the German La Poste parcel subsidiary Deutsche Paketdienst (DPD) on international and intercontinental flights. The Fedex/DPD cooperation concerns deliveries of DPD’s new express service, which is to be offered as of 1 July 2002.

The row over charging will be the first to break into the open since PostComm announced plans in January to open up the market for bulk letter mail. Business Post plans to collect mail from business customers, sort it and transport it to the most appropriate depot for final delivery by Royal Mail staff.

The troubled postal group has held informal discussions with quoted property company Land Securities and the George Soros-backed property investment group Mapeley.
Consignia is understood to be impressed with BT’s pounds 2.4bn property sale to Land Securities that completed last year, but a final decision over whether to follow suit is still months away. Consignia is putting the finishing touches to a plan to strip more than pounds 1bn from its cost base.
Paul Carvell, Business Post comments on Consignia: ‘I have the utmost respect for the Royal Mail. It is perhaps the best postal service in the world.’ but Consignia has ‘too many bosses and they are too slow to respond. The whole thing is too bureaucratic’. Carvell firmly backs The Mail on Sunday’s campaign to keep early-morning deliveries.
