Postal service disrupted as employees go on strike

Postal employees announcing closure of all the post offices around the country from Friday to protest government’s ‘indifference’ towards fulfilling their demands.

According to Subodh Devkota of Nepal Civil Servants Association, some 20,000 employees working in post offices across the country have halted works calling for the fulfillment of their demands which includes improvement in their working conditions and timely pay hikes, among others.

Devkota said they were compelled to take the drastic measure of closing down all the post offices as the government continued to turn a deaf ear to their demands despite their protests over the last one month. He said they would be forced to announce indefinite strike in all post offices if the government’s attitude remains unchanged.

People especially from the rural parts of Nepal who rely on postal services to get in touch with their near and dear ones both inside the country and abroad have been affected the most due to the strike in post offices.

Israel Postal Company to provide e-mail services

The Israel Postal Company will shortly be competing in the electronic arena to provide e-mail boxes and services to customers, if not in other areas controlled by the online giants.

The postal service’s motivation is simple: It must prepare for an era when regular mail, featuring envelopes and a stamp, disappears altogether and is replaced by electronic communications.

Once an authority and converted a year and a half ago into a government company, the Postal Company is going high-tech. It isn’t planning to turn into an Internet company per se, just to provide e-mail boxes and services, according to an announcement from the Communications Ministry yesterday.

The communication states that Communications Minister Ariel Atias feels that the Postal Company must become financially stronger by expanding its range of services.

His final approval for expansion into e-mail is expected shortly.

In fact, the Postal Company would simply become part of a global trend in which post offices worldwide are modernizing by providing electronic mail services to complement “snail mail” – that olden form of stamped letter wending its way through sleet or sandstorm on horse, tank, camel, whatever.

At present, e-mail services are controlled entirely by Internet service providers.

UPU and PUASP organize first training workshop for Latin America in Ecuador

Within the framework of a regional development plan (RDP) drawn up jointly by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and the Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal (PUASP), the two organizations teamed up with Correos del Ecuador to organize a training course in Quito from 21 to 23 August 2007.

The purpose of this workshop, which brought together specialists from some twenty Latin American postal operators, was two-fold: first, to encourage postal operators to adopt management tools to attract and maintain the loyalty of large customers, strengthen their business relations and increase their revenues; and second, to put in place a regional action plan, based on exchanges of experience, aimed at organizing the management of large customers and small- and medium-sized businesses.

The participants, which included the PUASP Secretary General, Serrana BASSINI, and the UPU Deputy Director General, Guozhong HUANG, as well as experts from their respective organizations and the region’s operators, took careful stock of the situation and identified potential market niches in areas such as parcels, marketing of existing services and value-added products.

This Latin American postal market development agreement, which will be monitored and supported by the PUASP and the UPU, will lead to three pilot projects geared towards increasing operators’ ability to manage large customers. Processes providing for the incorporation of business mail into operators’ market development activities will also be developed.

Through this project, the UPU and the PUASP wish to emphasize the importance of coordinating actions to increase the capacity of Posts to meet the needs of large customers, namely domestic public services and major export companies.

Deutsche Bahn Logistics Schenker GBP 10 bn revenues

Deutsche Bahn has announced half year results for 2007, with an increase in revenues of 5.8 percent to GBP 10.3 billion.

The company is a large and complex group of businesses with its core rail activity notable for its high capital investment and has seen an increase in operating profit of 44 percent to GBP 1 billion.

However Deutsche Bahn Logistics Schenker brand has shown considerable growth over the past six months, with revenues year-on-year up 8.1 percent at GBP 4.5 billion. EBIT was up 10.3 percent at GBP 129 million.

Schenker’s European ‘networked’ road transport has grown by 10 percent over the period, gaining market share. Schenker is Europe’s largest ‘less than trailer load’ operator yet it is reporting that demand has been so strong that it is suffering from a shortage of capacity.

Schenker says that demand is also strong in the ocean freight forwarding market, where it is one of the leading global players, but its margins have tightened due to the general shortage of space on key routes.

Schenker’s growth

Airfreight is growing less quickly with what it describes as ‘stagnation’ on trans-Atlantic routes but good development of the intra-Asian routes. In both businesses, however, Schenker is gaining market share. Schenker describes growth in its logistics business as being in ‘double digits’ with Europe remaining the centre of activity.

Schenker confirms that the market for freight forwarding and for network transport is consolidating, however it is not exploiting this quite as spectacularly as K+N and Panalpina.

DB has also seen growth in its rail freight, which at 4 percent is growing faster than the German transport sector generally. DB singled out bulk sectors such as chemicals and building materials as buoyant as intermodal container traffic. EBIT grew at 49 percent.

Collaboration with the World Customs Organization

The World Customs Organization (WCO) and the UPU have just signed a new memorandum of understanding. This agreement, aimed at taking greater account of the needs of international trade, recognizes the importance of a single postal territory, the universal postal service, and security measures for international mail transport networks. It represents another chapter in the collaboration between the two organizations which began in 1965. The last agreement, signed in 1994, was aimed at countering drug trafficking.

Customs is a vital link in the international mail processing chain, and the UPU strives to improve mail exchanges between countries by speeding up and simplifying the customs treatment of postal items. In 2005, the UPU estimated that some 43 million parcels had passed through the international service – an increase of 3.4 pct compared to 2004. By promoting the universal service, the UPU seeks to ensure that users of the postal service can send and receive goods and messages from point A to point B anywhere in the world.
