'NewCo' cargo airline established by DHL-Lufthansa

LUFTHANSA Cargo and DHL Express will establish a joint cargo carrier, commencing operations from Leipzig Halle airport in 2009.

Project name ‘NewCo’ will operate 10 freighters, most likely Boeing 777F or Boeing 747-400F aircraft. The new airline will fly intercontinental routes to North America, Asia and the Middle East, carrying express shipments and general cargo. The airline will be headed by Lufthansa manager Thomas Papke.

DHL was originally in negotiations with Cargolux and Emirates for such a venture. Insiders expect that personal relations between DHL and Lufthansa managers were key in the tie-up between the two companies. Klaus Zumwinkel, chairman of DHL’s parent company DPWN, is member of Lufthansa’s board of directors while Lufthansa’s former chief executive officer Jürgen Weber has a seat in DPWN’s board of directors.

Pall-Ex Managing Director Named Entrepreneur of the Year, by Ernst and Young

Hilary Devey, Founder and Managing Director of Pall-Ex, has achieved further recognition for her company in a prestigious awards ceremony.

Named as Entrepreneur of the Year for Business Services in the Southern Regional heat, Hilary was delighted to receive the award for her extraordinary abilities. Organized by Ernst and Young, there was some serious cross industry competition for the much coveted award, including entrepreneurs from the manufacturing, securities and engineering industries.

Judges were impressed with Hilary’s determination to succeed, which had an enormous impact on her personal life during the formation of the company. Starting a company single-handedly, from re-mortgaging her own house to raise start up capital, and lobbying local council for the right to trade was no easy task, but this hard work established the nationwide business she now leads.

Ministry of Labour and Emirates Post enter into agreement to pay private sector employees' salaries through post offices

The UAE Ministry of Labour has entered into an agreement with Emirates Post to allow private sector employers to pay employees’ salaries through select post offices and all branches of Wall Street Exchange.

The move is part of the Ministry’s efforts to curb the practice of late payment or non-payment of salaries by some companies. It will also allow workers to do money remittances and other financial transactions from a single window.

The select post offices and all branches of Wall Street Exchange will offer value-added services to employees of the participating companies. Apart from collecting salaries, the employees can remit money to their families overseas from the same counter. They can also instruct the counter staff to send a certain amount to their families and it will be automatically transferred on a chosen date.

The counters will also offer money exchange facilities. In the future, Emirates Post also plans Mobi-Post, a series of mobile post offices that will be positioned in the vicinity of labour camps.

Companies interested in joining the services have to enter into separate arrangements with Emirates Post. An account will be opened to enable easy transfer of money from the company to Emirates Post. Companies that join the system will benefit by way of reduced burden on staff and full security.

A rarity in future: New post offices

Suburban growth is generating thousands of new addresses in bedroom communities around Jacksonville. But the U.S. Postal Service hasn’t built a new post office in the metropolitan area since 2001.

Instead, the U.S. Postal Service is leasing space in shopping centers for post offices or installing postal counters inside other businesses, such as pharmacies and convenience stores.

The old model of building a stand-alone post office in a fast-growing community has gone the way of the 39-cent stamp.

John Mica, U.S. Rep. said convincing postal authorities to build more branches has always been challenging, but it’s become tougher as e-mail and fax machines take business from first-class mail. The Postal Service relies primarily on income it gets from selling stamps and other services while delivering 213 billion pieces of mail a year.

Postal Service spokesman Bill Tyler said more customers are doing their postal transactions online at usps.com, which started in 1997. The site averages 26 million visitors a month, and the average order is $80, according to the U.S. Postal Service. Tyler said the more people who go online, the less time they spend waiting in line, which also reduces the need for new brick-and-mortar postal branches. For those who just need stamps, machines are often all they need.

The last time the Postal Service built its own post office in the metropolitan area was six years ago, when it opened an 8,200-square-foot facility on College Drive in Clay County.

In the suburbs, that could be the future trend for a trip to the post office – fill up with gas and send a package at the same place.

Save the bay teams up with DHL and the San Francisco giants

During select San Francisco Giants games this summer, Save The Bay and DHL will raise awareness about pollution threats to San Francisco Bay as part of the DHL’s Splash for Cash program. Along with many others hoping to catch Barry Bonds’ record-breaking home run, Save The Bay volunteers will paddle in McCovey Cove in DHL-branded yellow kayaks to wait for the famous “splash hits.” DHL will donate $1,000 to Save The Bay for every “splash hit” that sails into the cove, with a minimum donation of $10,000 at the end of the season. Save The Bay will use the money raised to support its work to protect and restore San Francisco Bay.

Save The Bay is taking the opportunity to educate baseball fans and Bay Area residents about one of today’s greatest threats to the Bay, dangerous pollution from homes, cars, and neighborhoods. Trash dropped in streets and parking lots ends up in the Bay, killing wildlife like seals, pelicans, and leopard sharks. At each game – through announcements and scoreboard messages – Save The Bay will remind Giants fans to “stash their trash” before, during, and after the game, noting its harmful effects to Giants’ mascot, Lou Seal, and his friends in the Bay.
