Postcomm reviews Postcode Address File Code of Practice

Postcomm today published for consultation its first review of the Code of Practice that it introduced last year on changes to the Postcode Address File (PAF) – the list of the postal addresses of all 27 million households throughout the UK, which is maintained by Royal Mail. This Code of Practice for the first time set out rules that, among other things, enabled people to ask Royal Mail to make changes to parts of their postal address.

UK post price rise to plug pension gap

Royal Mail has warned that it may shortly be forced to raise the price of postage to help plug the pounds 4.6bn hole in its pension fund. The revelation comes just seven weeks after the state-owned mail company increased the price of first- and second-class stamps by a penny. It is understood that Royal Mail is considering a further 1p rise – which would generate pounds 170m a year – to shore up its pension fund, which has 400,000 members.

Red letter day for MSPS' mail

The Scottish Parliament has scrapped controversial plans to privatise its internal postal system after an outcry from MSPs. The service, which is currently operated by the Royal Mail, is instead to be taken over by the parliament itself. The existing Royal Mail employees working at the parliament will be offered the chance to stay on and become part of the parliament’s own staff. There were widespread protests earlier this year when it was claimed an English firm, Business Post, based in Slough, was poised to win the GBP 1 million contract to deliver MSPs’ mail.

UK Royal Mail to launch internet access pilot

The Royal Mail plans to kick off a pilot program to provide Internet access through kiosks at post office branches. The pilots will be launched in partnership with Internet café chain easyInternetcafe in the next two months at some unspecified post offices. A Royal Mail spokeswoman said the Internet pilots would last a year. The pilots are designed to assess the demand for Internet access service at the post office. Depending on the response, the post will expand the Internet access service. It has yet to decide on the number of post offices where it’ll offer the pilots or the pricing during the trial. “We’re still working out the finer details,” a spokesman said.

Fedex keen on Chu Lai (Vietnam) open economic zone

American express service firm FedEx may establish an international air transport center in Chu Lai Open Economic Zone in the central province of Quang Nam (Vietnam). Speaking at a conference held in HCMC yesterday to announce the Government’s decision on establishment of the country’s first such zone, the provincial government said it would work with FedEx over the project soon.”I have met FedEx representatives and found that the corporation has shown keen interest in building such a center for Asia,” provincial Chairman Nguyen Xuan Phuc told the conference.

TNT Express first to partner an Iraqi courier

TNT Express, the leading business to business express carrier has today announced a partnership agreement with Baghdad’s largest courier company IKE Express to provide door to door delivery services to and from Iraq. TNT Express is the first international express company to link up with an Iraqi national operator since the lifting of UN sanctions and the partnership will provide more reliable services for customers in the region.

A new daily TNT Express road service from across the border in Amman, Jordan is now carrying documents, parcels and air freight into Baghdad with operations expected to extend to Basra as well as other Iraqi cities in the next few months. All delivery drivers engaged in the partnership with IKE Express wear TNT Express uniforms and vehicles carry TNT livery with all operations being controlled by the TNT Express global link computer system.
