Sri Lankan postal workers protest against privatization, alleged corruption

Sri Lankan postal workers staged a one-day strike Monday, paralyzing the island’s postal service, as a part of their campaign against privatization and alleged corruption in the postal department.

Postal workers around the country have joined this strike demanding action against corruption and waste and also to halt any effort to privatize the service, said postal union spokesman Nawaratne Bandara.

The government has repeatedly said it has no plans to privatize any state institution.

But Bandara complained that the government had licensed private companies to deliver mail as well, in what amounted to a de facto privatization campaign.

TNT to invest 7 million euros in Vietnam

The global express service provider TNT announced on July 24 that it would invest more than 7 million Euros over the next four years in its domestic express services in Vietnam.

The launch makes TNT the first international express mover in the country to introduce and offer premium express services.

Part of the investment will go towards additional vehicles and new hires. The company will also open five more branches in Bac Ninh, Vinh Phuc, An Giang and Ca Mau provinces to support the service, increasing the total number of TNT’s location in Vietnam to 23.

As with all its services, TNT offers an integrated and comprehensive range of services including door-to-door express delivery of documents, parcels, and freight.

“Fast-tracking our growth in Vietnam supports our growth strategy to focus on enhancing the efficient flow of goods and information across borders, facilitating our companies’ access to other international markets, in particular, China,” said Ommo Boots, regional managing director for TNT Asia.

Ommo Boots, regional managing director for TNT Asia said the domestic service also supports the recent expansion of TNT’s Asia Road Network into Vietnam which will prepare the company for accelerated high double-digit growth as part of its strategic agenda for the next three to five years.

TNT also plans to expand the Asia Road Network to reach China through the northeastern border of Vietnam by the end of this year.

Postal workers on strike in Nepal

Nepal Civil Service Employees Union (NECSEU-Postal) along with other groups of union went on strike at General Post Office (GPO Kathmandu ) and all post offices through out the country, demanding respect at work, trade union rights, postal allowances and improvement of postal services and it’s offices.

On 25 July 2007, they met with Minister of Information & Communication (MoIC) and other Ministry Officials to fulfill their demands as soonest.

After their meeting with Minister Mr. Madhav Neupane President of NECSEU Postal wing informed, “Minister was serious towards the issue”

At the same time he also enforced that if government doesn’t response to their demand, they will start another step of strike. Although the postal service is the most important service, but it has been neglected by Government policies. More than 10000 workers are employed in this service and it has to compete with private sector. Competing in the market is not possible with out improving the services and infrastructures and encouraging postal workers.

Sagawa Express Begins Using Bio-fuels for Pickup/Delivery Trucks

Sagawa Express Co, Ltd., a member of the SG Holdings Group, conducts trial use of “bio-natural gas” in natural gas vehicles, while also commencing use of “biogasoline” in cargo minivans (gasoline-fueled), with the aim of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from its pickup/delivery trucks.

The Kobe municipal government, together with a private company, co-developed a device to purify digestion gas from sewage treatment, using a high-pressure water absorption method, and to use resulting “bio-natural gas” with a methane level of over 98 pct. The municipal government has been conducting demonstration experiments since 2006, with such public vehicles as city buses and garbage trucks.

In May 2003, Sagawa Express became the first Japanese company– and the world’s only logistics company– to join the Climate Savers Programme, a global warming prevention program run by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Under this program, the company aims at reducing total CO2 emissions from our business activities at a rate of 6 pct by year 2012, in comparison with the base year of 2002.

As a means of achieving this goal, the company has established a plan to introduce a cumulative total of 7,000 natural gas vehicles by the year 2012; so far we have introduced 3,394 natural gas vehicles– the most such vehicles owned by one Japanese company– and have installed a total of 7 in-house natural gas stations.

Vietnam: Foreign investors sniff postal sector opportunity

Foreign companies are lining up as Viet Nam opens its post and telecommunications industry, which is expected to be one of the most lucrative sectors in the country.

Last June, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung issued a new directive easing the way for more foreign investment.

The Ministry of Post and Telematics is required to come up with a plan to open up the domestic post and telecommunications market for foreign companies in line with Viet Nam’s World Trade Organisation commitments.

In the postal service field, foreign companies will be allowed to enter into a joint venture with a Vietnamese post partner and their capital contributions to these projects must be less than 51 per cent.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Duc Lai said that the telecommunications ministry is drafting a decree with specific regulations for foreign investors.

The new decree includes measures aimed at removing impediments to investment activities in the posts and telecommunications field. The draft may be submitted to the government by year’s end.

Pham Hong Hai, director of the Telecommunications Department, predicted that foreign investors will be most interested in partnerships involving mobile services and renting of network infrastructures.
