DHL wishes to further partnership with Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corporation

DHL Vietnam has shrugged off the idea of setting up a totally foreign-owned firm in favor of expanding cooperation with the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT).

VNPT started acting as agents for DHL in 1988 with the first bilateral deal inked in Ho Chi Minh City. The Germany-based company got permission to set up a joint venture with a 51 percent stake with the largest telecommunications group in Vietnam in January 2007 in order to meet ever-growing market demands.

Vietnam has allowed a foreign company to hold a 51 pct stake in an express delivery joint venture as part of its entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO). However, wholly foreign-owned express companies have to wait until 2012 to go into operation.

VNPT is quite a familiar service provider to the Vietnamese with a wide agent network covering 52 cities and provinces across Vietnam.

Baxter said his company with a market share of 40 percent in Vietnam is consistently experiencing double digit growth exceeding 20 percent in Vietnam as the manufacturing sector continues to grow, and Vietnam realizes its export potential.

DHL has already kicked off a 14 million USD project to build two major service centers in southern Dong Nai province and Hanoi and to purchase a new fleet of vehicles. The move is expected to help DHL rival around 20 other foreign market players including TNT, Fedex, UPS and JNE.

TNT of Australia has just brought to service the trans-Asia road network (ARN) in Vietnam after adding 6 more million EUR to its project kicked off in 2005. After the first phase with total budget of 2 million EUR, the ARN project created a road linking Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

Toll unveils its new fully integrated air freight network

Toll Group, the Asian logistics provider, today unveiled its domestic fully integrated air freight strategy designed to better service users of air freight throughout the country.

Toll Group Managing Director Mr Paul Little said, “We now have the capability to provide efficient
and competitive air line-haul services to support the growth in the air express market, and we
expect the business to grow strongly.”

The launching of the new dedicated air fleet of three Boeing 737-300F and two ATR42, together with Toll’s current 50 charter aircraft provides a key platform for freighter services.

The Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Regional Services, The Hon Mark Vaile MP, officially unveiled the planes at Brisbane airport before an audience of key government, business and industry dignitaries.

In addition, Toll and Virgin Blue have agreed to enter into a long term arrangement for the provision of freight capacity of Virgin Blue fleet.

Mr Little said, “This agreement enables Toll to secure important belly space capacity and operational management throughout the Virgin Blue network, whilst providing Virgin Blue with a strong revenue stream anticipated to grow rapidly.

UPS Takes Delivery of First 747-400

UPS’s first 747-400 arrived at the company’s global air hub here today for its public debut, ready to begin fulfilling the global mission emblazoned on its fuselage – “Synchronizing the world of commerce.”

UPS will fly the jumbo freighter on its long-range international routes, primarily into the Asia-Pacific region. Regular destinations for UPS’s first 747-400 will include Hong Kong; Incheon, South Korea; Sydney, Australia, and Shanghai, where the company is building its China air hub. Ultimately, the company will use the aircraft on its “around the world” flights with stops in Cologne, Germany; Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and Mumbai, India.

UPS will take delivery of three new 747-400s in 2007 and five more in 2008. In addition, the company will acquire five more of the aircraft from other carriers by 2010, bringing the total fleet size to 13.

The 747-400 has a payload of 273,300 pounds with a range of 4,400 nautical miles. It has 30 load positions on its main deck and can carry 32 smaller containers on its lower deck. The aircraft is powered by General Electric CF6-80C2B5F engines.

The 747-400 will be the first freighter in the UPS fleet with a hinged nose. The aircraft’s nose-loading capability is ideal for air freight, allowing for extra large or extra long shipments.

DHL starts ULD buildup service at Kansai International Airport

DHL launched an air cargo buildup service at Kansai International Airport that achieves speedier delivery of cargo while reducing risk of damage or theft during transit.

The export service, launched last month, is being provided by DHL Global Forwarding — a DHL business unit providing air and ocean freight services— using Frankfurt-bound flights operated by Lufthansa Cargo.

Traditionally, buildup (Bulk Unitization Program, or BUP) operations using unit load devices (ULDs) have been undertaken by airlines at the airport after cargo has been received from forwarders. Recently, however, demand for buildup by forwarders in Japan has been increasing in response to the need to reduce time consumed for cargo transfers at destinations and also to curtail theft and damage during transit.

Until now, DHL Global Forwarding’s ULD buildup (BUP) service was provided only at Narita Cargo Center, where DHL became the first foreign forwarder to receive buildup permission in 2005. Now, for the first time, the company can provide the service at Kansai International Airport. DHL Global Forwarding undertook significant investment in equipment, increasing the number of slave pallets, slave pallet racks, and forklifts to ensure effective program implementation.

DHL opens office in Novosibirsk – Russia

Further expansion of the Service Point network is part of DHL continued business development strategy in Russia. Late in 2006, the company announced its plans to open 21 additional offices in the country’ s biggest cities, investing over USD 15 million in the next 3 years.

In May, the carrier opened two new offices in Moscow and one in St. Petersburg and is expanded services at a fast rate.

The expansion is part of a USD 250 million investment in the country over the next 3-4 years, announced by parent company DPWN last June.

The investments are focused on infrastructure and facilities, further expansion of the product portfolio, introduction of the latest technologies and staff training.

DHL Russia is also expanding its domestic road network, which includes purpose-built new cross-docking terminals in key locations that will connect the key economic centres of the country.

All four DHL businesses in Russia, DHL Express, DHL Freight, DHL Global Forwarding and DHL Exel Supply Chain will benefit from the investment, the company said.
