DHL set to invest USD70 mln in Incheon Airport

DHL is considering investing USD70 million to build a cargo terminal and warehouse at Incheon International Airport, the main gateway to South Korea, government officials said Tuesday. DHL’s chief executive Frank Appel will deliver such an investment offer to Minister Choo Byung-jik on Wednesday, according to the officials at the Ministry of Construction and Transportation.
DHL’s holding company Deutsche Post World Net is set to invest USD20 million for its cargo terminal and USD50 million for its air cargo warehouse at the airport, the officials said.

FedEx eyes China’s potential logistics market

FedEx Corp is training eager eye on China. Frederick W. Smith, founder, chairman, and CEO of FedEx, said on November 9 that the fast-growing Chinese market draws global attention at present, and the company had achieved great development in recent years thanks to the Asian market, especially China.
Therefore, FedEx aims to expand its business in the potential country. However, it has no intention to set up a wholly owned enterprises but joint ventures in the near future. The US based company plans to set up its Asia Pacific distribution center in the new Baiyun Airport of Guangzhou, and the construction work is expected to be finished by 2008.

DHL expands Hong Kong superhub

DHL announced an additional USD110 million investment to expand its Central Asia air express hub at the Hong Kong International Airport. The center of DHL’s regional network, the Central Asia SuperHub is being built six years ahead of schedule to meet soaring demand, the company said. The flagship facility, serving the Pearl River Delta manufacturing center, “is strategically positioned for us to meet the growth in intra-Asia, as well as inter-regional trade,” said Scott Price, chief executive, DHL Express – Asia Pacific. The expansion was originally scheduled for completion in 2013.

Thailand: Federal Express upbeat over new business volume after new airport opens

Federal Express Corp expects the new Bangkok international airport will result in a large increase in the amount the international shipments but warns that the timeliness of the airport’s opening is critical, the Bangkok Post reports.
“I think everybody recognises that more delays would actually mean missed opportunities for the country. If you look around, the airport is a very key competitive factor especially in the economies of Southeast Asia, be it in Malaysia, Hong Kong or Thailand,” said Clifton Chua, FedEx managing director for Thailand, Indochina and the Philippines. “And Don Muang airport’s capacity itself is bursting at the seams.” FedEx like other international express couriers is banking on the new international airport, which is expected to begin commercial services in June next year.
