Portugal CTT 2004 Profit Up 96.2 Pct Y/Y

Portuguese postal service CTT-Correios de Portugal posted a profit of 50.1 mln euro (USD65.7mln) for 2004, an increase of 96.2 pct year-on-year, CTT said on March 3, 2005.

CTT said the profit rose mainly due to the 2.5 pct increase of its revenue to a total 707 mln euro (USD926.5 mln).

Another factor contributing to the profit rise was the reduction of the taxes paid by CTT, which fell by 69.9 pct to 16.1 mln euro (USD21.1 mln).

Personnel costs fell 7.2 pct to 372.8 mln euro (USD488.6 mln).

CTT’s earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) totalled 97.9 mln euro (USD128.3 mln).

Portugal CGD Has 60 Days To Decide on CTT Postal Bank

Portugal’s largest bank, the state-controlled Caixa Geral de Depositos (CGD) has 60 days to inform local postal service operator CTT – Correios de Portugal whether it will exercise its preference right on the future CTT’s postal bank, it was reported on January 28, 2005.

CTT has already informed CGD on its agreement with Portuguese bank Banif to resume the postal bank project. It was reported earlier that Banif and CTT had reached an agreement for the establishment of a new retail bank with a share capital of 35 mln euro (USD45.6 mln). The bank will serve individuals and small companies. In terms of the distribution of the product, the new bank will rely on the existing network of CTT offices, while in operating terms, it will rely on the Banif infrastructure.

Portugal TAP Postal Traffic at 9,100 T 2004

The postal traffic of Portugal’s flag carrier TAP – Air Portugal reached a record-high 9,100 tonnes in 2004, registering a year-on-year increase of 13 percentage points, it was reported on January 24, 2005.

The record-high levels of the company’s 2004 postal traffic reflected mainly the strong performance of TAP’s offices in Lisbon and Rome. The air carrier’s office in Lisbon registered a total 4.5 tonnes of postal traffic in 2004, while the postal traffic of the company’s office in Rome exceeded 1.5 tonnes in the period.

TAP’s postal traffic in 2003 totalled 8,100 tonnes.

The largest client of the company’s cargo and postal services department Direccao de Carga e Correio is Portugal’s postal operator CTT-Correios de Portugal.

Portugal Q3 2004 Postal Traffic Revenue Down 0.6 Pct Y/Y

Portugal’s postal traffic revenue totalled 90.997 mln euros ($119.3 mln) in the third quarter of 2004, down by 0.6 pct year-on-year, local communications regulator Anacom said on January 17, 2005.

The third quarter of 2004 postal traffic revenue translated into a total 64.882 million shipments, with the national traffic totalling 56,733 million shipments, and the outgoing international traffic and the incoming international traffic totalling 5.124 million shipments and 4.021 million shipments, respectively.
