UK Target set to attack pallets

Target Express this week re-launched its UK-wide palletised distribution service, with guaranteed delivery pre-9am, pre-10am and pre-noon. Pallets will be trunked on the lower deck of double-deck trailers, with parcels carried on the upper deck in roll-cages. Target says it already moves more than 500,000 pallets a year annually and needed to re-position itself to attract more customers using it for parcels.

Nacex Opens Delivery Offices in Molina de Segura, Madrid

Spanish express delivery firm Nacex, an affiliated company of transports and logistics company Grupo Logista, has opened a new delivery office in Molina de Segura, southeastern Murcia region, and three in Madrid, the company said on July 8, 2004.

The opening of the offices was part of the previously announced network expansion of Nacex. The company said that would open a total eight delivery offices in Spain by the end of 2004, mainly in Madrid and the eastern Levante zone.

EU state-aid rules may force some markets to open

In their new rules restricting state aid to troubled companies, European Union regulators could require governments to open protected markets in exchange for approving some corporate bailouts. The EU announced new guidelines yesterday aimed at forcing companies to pay back state aid. But the initiative doesn’t stop at demanding cash or the selloff of assets in return. It also gives governments the alternative of fostering more competition as a way to gain EU approval for aid to companies in distress. But experts say the rules could magnify differences within Europe over the pace at which governments permit competition in protected sectors. France and Germany, which have been outspoken about protecting their industrial giants, already accuse the European Commission of jeopardizing jobs and stability by moving too quickly to liberalize markets.

Air Express firms see vast Asian market potential

Foreign air express companies such as UPS and FedEx say they will expand their business in China following the Sino-US aviation agreement signed recently.

The new agreement contains a key provision that allows US cargo carriers to establish hubs in China once specific criteria are met.

FedEx is looking at hub expansion opportunities in Asia, including consideration of the new Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, says David L Cunningham, president of FedEx Asia-Pacific operation.

The new Trade Automation Service (TAS) is one of the most comprehensive databases available, providing trade and customs data covering more than 64 countries that are responsible for 95percent of the world’s trade.
