Secrets of my success: John Ivers, Managing director, DHL Global Mail

As someone who has spent nearly 25 years dealing with mail, it has been important for me to be able to adapt to the significant changes the UK mail industry has seen over the past few years.

I started out as a fresh-faced economics graduate on a management development programme at Pitney Bowes, where I experienced business at all levels, including general management, sales, customer service, marketing, finance and IT. It taught me that sending and receiving mail is the lifeblood of any business.

UK Postal Services: Doors open on mail

The postal landscape is changing as Royal Mail finally steps aside to let new operators through. Postal deregulation has been on the cards for years but is finally starting to happen. Some banks and utilities are switching to competitors of Royal Mail, a vote of confidence that could encourage other volume mailers to follow. Full liberalisation was originally set for April 2007, with a staggered schedule that would give Royal Mail time to overcome its financial problems before facing the competition. However, thanks to the company’s rapid recovery, the government was recently able to bring the date forward to the beginning of next year. In practice much has depended on Royal Mail opening up its delivery network to competitors, as it is difficult for new entrants to set up an infrastructure from scratch. That has been a problem, postal experts say, as until recently it showed reluctance to do so.

DHL takes next step in plan to rival UK Royal Mail

DHL Global Mail opened its first distribution centre outside London yesterday as part of its plans to be a national network rivalling Royal Mail for business post. Similar arrangements have been made with other licensed carriers ahead of the introduction of full competition next January.
However, DHL hopes that by building its own network for business-to-business deliveries it can guarantee a faster, more reliable service than the national carrier. The new service, called Smartmail Citispeed, aims to deliver 99 per cent of mail on time, including the option of overnight delivery.
