Thiel Logistik sells stake in DPD Austria to GeoPost

GeoPost, Europe’s third largest provider of express and deferred parcels services, has reached an agreement to acquire Thiel Logistik AG’s 25.5% stake in DPD Austria. These shares were originally held by non-depositary partner companies Birkart, Dachser and Nathe & Quehenberger, with each holding equal stakes. The share purchase price has not been disclosed. The transaction is currently awaiting approval from Austrian anti-trust authorities. All parties expect the acquisition to be finalised by the end of this year. After this, GeoPost will be DPD Austria’s second largest shareholder. GeoPost holds about 85% in the DPD franchisor organization.

Oesterreichische Post says no plans to cooperate with Deutsche Post’s DHL

Oesterreichische Post has no plans to cooperate with Deutsche Post World Net AG’s express courier unit DHL and will continue working with Austria’s DPD delivery service, chief executive Anton Wais told the Financial Times Deutschland. Earlier press reports had stated the Austrian state mail carrier would cooperate with DHL as part of a strategic partnership. Previously, Deutsche Post failed in an attempt to purchase a 25 pct stake in Oesterreichische Post, the press reports had added.

Possible Austrian Opportunities for Deutsche Post

Deutsche Post may yet gain entry on to the Austrian market, as a press source has indicated that Osterreichische Post, the Austrian postal service operator, may be planning to co-operate with the German group’s logistics subsidiary DHL in parcel forwarding. Osterreichische Post head Anton Wais had favoured Deutsche Post as an investor, but had faced political opposition. At present, Osterreichische Post co-operates with DPD Austria in parcel forwarding, and an extensive agreement exists between the two companies, which, it is feared, could present difficulties if the national postal operator were to switch to DHL.
