Hong Kong postal service posts first profit in 6 years

The Sars outbreak has helped deliver Hongkong Post its first profit in six years. Postmaster-General Allan Chiang Yam-wang said more online purchases and an increase in deliveries during the outbreak contributed to the service reaping a HKD17 million profit last financial year. New revenue-raising measures and job cuts were also major factors in the turnaround. The post office recorded revenue of HKD3.53 billion in 2003-04, an increase of HKD23 million from HKD3.51 billion in the previous year. At the same time, it reduced expenditure by HKD47 million, from HKD3.56 billion in 2002-03 to $3.51 billion last year.

Hongkong Post plans to make the city an international mail-transit hub to generate revenue and promote its world-class airport and logistics services.

It has already landed its first big client – the US Postal Service.

The self-financing government body, which is attempting to diversify, said it would also launch a one-stop service for customers to order and send mooncakes to mainland relatives for the Mid-Autumn Festival.

HK Post expands Speedpost destinations to 216

Hong Kong Post said on Monday the delivery network of its international courier service nearly covers every corner of the world by expanding 120 additional destinations to reach a total of 216. The expansion of the network enables Speedpost to have a much more extensive coverage to South America, Eastern Europe and Africa. “Speedpost is always a good choice of express service for businesses, in particular small and median sized enterprises, in sending time-sensitive documents and packages to overseas countries,” a spokesman of Hong Kong Post said.

Hong Kong Post launches new electronic mail service

Hong Kong Post is turning a stumbling block into a stepping stone as it launches a new service to take advantage of consumers’ increasing preference for electronic mail over standard postal service. With regular mail deliveries in steady decline around the world, Hong Kong Post is repositioning itself by developing applications for securing and authenticating transactions over the Internet. Other postal services are adopting a similar strategy, with the US Postal Service unveiling a service that lets customers e-mail electronic documents to the agency for digital postmarking.
