Jamaica Post to decentralise operations

The Jamaica Postal Corporation (PostCorp) is planning to decentralise the way it sorts and delivers most of the island’s mail, from one core centre on South Camp Road in Kingston to four centres across the island.

Jamaica Post must be profitable by 2006

Western Bureau — Buoyed by the Postal Corporation of Jamaica’s $128 million jump in revenue last year, commerce, science and technology minister, Phillip Paulwell, has urged the corporation’s board to ensure that the island’s postal service is profitable by 2006.

“The new board has been mandated to bring the postal service to a break-even position within two years, and thereafter into profitability,” Paulwell said.

Jamaica Post office problems continue

The island’s postal service continues to face serious problems despite the attempts over the past five years to reform its management structure and operations.

The report of budgetary shortfalls resulting in utility companies disconnecting electricity and telephone services underscore the extent of the problems. The initial reforms which led to the formation of the Postal Corporation of Jamaica to replace the Post and Telecommunications Department, were meant to push the agency to become a more commercial operation. There were also extensive refurbishing and moves to improve efficiency in the delivery of mail as well as to provide the public with technology-driven over-the-counter services.

Postal corp examines franchise programme

The postal Corporation of Jamaica is examining the implementation of a franchise programme to increase efficiency and extend its customer reach within the next six months.

The Postmaster General and CEO explained that the proposed franchise programme, that has already been drafted, is a reaction to the increased challenges being faced by the Corporation, including mounting debt.

DHL joint venture with Jamaica Post

DHL Worldwide entered a joint venture to sell express delivery services through offices of the Postal Corporation of Jamaica, a DHL spokeswoman told Reuters. Postal Corporation of Jamaica has begun to sell DHL services at four of its offices in Kingston, Jamaica, and ‘the goal is for it to grow,’ said Klaire Albright of the International Americas business unit of DHL, based in southern Florida.
