Jamaican PostCorp goes for profit with new deliveries

The Postal Corporation of Jamaica (PostCorp), in a drive for profitability, is to offer occasional mail delivery primarily to business clients, and in the process, strengthen a market segment that is still in its infancy.

With this new service, the PostCorp believes it can enable corporate Jamaica to reach targeted audiences efficiently by distributing their brochures and fliers.

“The advertising mail market is not really well developed in Jamaica,” says Dr Blossom O’Meally Nelson, postmaster general and chief executive officer of PostCorp. “People tend to spend a lot of money on radio and television advertising (and) in the print media, but that direct advertising to households and individuals is best facilitated by the post office.”

DHL, Jamaica Post now in partnership

The intertnational courier service provider, DHL Express Inc., through its Jamaican subsidiary, DHL Jamaica Limited, is now a commercial partner of Jamaica Post. DHL has drop-off facilities at four post offices in the Corporate Area. The post office drop-off points fill a gap in the DHL operations in Jamaica. The most significant benefit to DHL and customers of the post office who use the service is convenient access to an international service.

Jamaica Post to raise postal fees by 50 percent

Jamaica Post will raise postal rates by up to 50 per cent next month, and the government will be moving to regulate ‘private letter operators’ as well as the wider bulk mail industry as it moves to increase the Postal Corporation’s earnings. Commerce, Science and Technology Minister Phillip Paulwell hopes these measures will help the Postal Corporation of Jamaica break even by 2006.

Postal Union lauds plans for Caribbean postal training school

The eighth Annual Confe-rence of the Caribbean Postal Union lauded plansput forward by the Postal Corporation (PostCorp) of Jamaica for the establishment of a Postal Training School for the Caribbean. The new facility, which will be located at the South Camp Road Central Sorting Office, aims to provide training in postal technology to employees at all levels. The plan also makes room for a core curriculum of workplace competencies in a number of areas including communication, supervisory, and management skills. The new curriculum will allow for the accumulation of traansferable credits which will enable postal employees to up-grade their certification and provide opportunities for entry into University programmes.

Jamaica Post to decentralise operations

The Jamaica Postal Corporation (PostCorp) is planning to decentralise the way it sorts and delivers most of the island’s mail, from one core centre on South Camp Road in Kingston to four centres across the island.

The PostCorp, which will be working along with the Universal Postal Union (UPU), said the decentralisation of the service should be completed by the end of the year.
