Japanese Yamato Transport to Launch Small-Lot Mail Delivery Service

Japanese door-to-door parcel delivery firm Yamato Transport Co. plans to launch small-lot mail delivery services for individuals Wednesday in a bid to compete with Japan Post, Japan’s public postal corporation. For the launch of new services, excluding the delivery of personal letters, Yamato Transport has obtained government approval to change contract terms on its existing mail services for large-lot clients, informed sources said Tuesday.

Gov’t to gradually scrap tax breaks for Japan Post

The government is considering gradually scrapping preferential tax treatment for Japan Post after its privatization in April 2007, a government source said.

Japan Post, a public corporation set up in April 2003 to take over mail delivery, postal savings and insurance services from the Postal Services Agency, is now free of corporate tax and stamp duty on the three postal services.

All 3 Japan Post divisions likely to see profits in FY 2003

Japan Post is likely to register profits in all of its three major business fields — mail delivery, postal savings and postal insurance — in fiscal 2003 to March 31 this year, its president said Wednesday. Masaharu Ikuta told a news conference, “We want to secure even greater business results in fiscal 2004 and thereafter.” The mail-delivery operations will likely return to the black in the wake of the previous year’s poor performance. Gains from the division are likely to exceed the 10 billion yen line, they said.

Japan Govt mulls making post offices more like convenience stores

Post offices should be modeled on convenience stores and sell a variety of items, from financial products to household goods, according to proposals being drawn up by the Cabinet Office. The proposals are part of government plans to privatize the three postal operations — mail, savings and life insurance — currently offered by Japan Post. By easing regulations on post offices, the government aims to allow privatized postal operations to earn revenue and improve profitability. Currently, post offices can sell only products related to postal services.
