DHL offers clients discounts on bulk cargo

Under the new pricing regime, any shipments weighing more than 51 kilogrammes will enjoy a tariff discount of between 35 and 45 per cent if they are headed to some select 27 destinations.

Consignments from the destinations are also covered by the promotion, which runs until December.

Lawrence Yumbya, the National Sales Manager at DHL said the offer was meant to drive up shipment volumes while easing the burden on customers at this time when the global economy is feeling the heat from high oil prices and turbulence from America’s sub-prime mortgage crisis.

The promotion covers Botswana, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and the Sudan. Others are Tanzania, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland. The United Kingdom, USA, Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and United Arab Emirates are also on the list.

The good news comes three months after DHL unveiled a USD 474 million shipment hub in Europe to improve on its deliveries.

The facility, which is located at the Leipzig-Halle airport in Germany, is expected to reduce DHL’s shipment running time to half, translating into faster deliveries across the globe.

It has the capacity to handle about 60 aircraft per day and to process about 1,500 tonnes of freight.

The Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK) preparing to raise mail charges

The Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK) has filed an application with the communications sector regulator seeking permission to increase mail box charges.

A notice published in the current issue of the Kenya Gazette indicates that charges for corporate, individual, and special groups may go up from August.

If approved, corporations will pay Sh 6, 000 for the mail box every year up from the current rate of Sh 4,200 per year.

Individuals will add Sh 400 to the current rate of Sh 1,400 while the special groups will add Sh 500 to the current rate of Sh 3,700. Charges for the sub postal office will, however, remain unchanged.

In the gazette notice signed by the acting CCK director general Peres Nkonge, the Postal Corporation cites the steep rise in the cost of renting premises for leased operations, administrative costs and purchase of the letter boxes.

Consumers have 30 days from Friday last week to make representations or objections to the proposed new tariffs. Such representations or objections must be made in writing to the director general of CCK.

The drive for higher rental charges comes amid a shift by majority of consumers from postal to email services.

PCK has responded to this change by diversifying its portfolio to new business lines such as cyber services. It is however bound by the Universal Service Obligations to offer basic postal services to all customers including remote parts of the country.

Kenyan to head African postal body

The Pan African Postal Union (PAPU) has named Kenya’s Rodah Masaviru the new secretary general.

Masaviru beat her only rival to clinch a four-year term at the helm of the continental body, Director of Information and Public Communications, Ezekiel Mutua, said.

The African postal body has 43 member countries and the other good news for Kenya is that it was also elected to the union’s administrative council for the next four years.

PAPU is a specialised agency of the African Union which aims to improve postal services in Africa.

Kenyan Information and Communications Minister, Samuel Poghisio, who led a strong Kenyan delegation, commended the team for a task well executed.

“This just shows how much we can achieve with a focused group like this one. It has been a tiring job but one that was worth every bit of it,” the minister said.

Before her election, Masaviru had served the union as the assistant secretary-general in Arusha, Tanzania.

A holder of a masters degree in population studies from the University of Nairobi, Masaviru had worked for the now-defunct Kenya Posts and Telecommunications Corporation before joining the union.

The defunct state corporation was split into two a few years ago — Telkom Kenya, which handles telecommunications and the Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK).

Kenya to chair 24th UPU Congress in Geneva and future Council of Administration

Kenya will chair the 24th Universal Postal Congress in Geneva from 23 July to 12 August 2008 as well as the UPU’s Council of Administration for 2009-2012.

The Kenyan Government has confirmed that Mr. Bishar A. Hussein, a former Postmaster General of Kenya Post and currently Kenya’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, will chair the Congress.

When the UPU Council of Administration decided last February to change the venue of the 24th Universal Postal Congress from Nairobi to Geneva, it also passed a resolution inviting Kenya to chair the Congress and the future Council of Administration. Kenya has now formally accepted these invitations.

Kenya will also chair the Council of Administration for 2009-2012, a UPU body made up of 41 member countries and responsible for overseeing the organization’s finances, international postal regulations and strategic direction of the Union between Congresses.

In other Congress news, France’s Edouard Dayan, current UPU Director General, and China’s Guozhong Huang, current Deputy Director General, will run for a second four-year mandate. No other candidates have stepped forward for the top UPU jobs.
So far, Great Britain, Greece, the Russian Federation and Switzerland have announced their candidacy for the chairmanship of the Postal Operations Council, a 40-member UPU body in charge of overseeing a range of postal operational issues such as security, quality of service, technical cooperation and development, postal financial services and more. Other countries could still announce their candidacy up until Congress.

TNT expands in Kenya

TNT Express has acquired its long-term Kenyan agent Aircare Charters in a bid to strengthen its position in the country and develop Nairobi into a regional hub, the locally-based newspaper Business Daily reported.

The courier company has invested 138 million Kenyan shillings (EUR 1.4 million) towards expanding its foothold in the country, the newspaper said. Kenya will now be the company’s hub in the region providing a link for its operations in East and Central Africa.

TNT Express regional MD for Middle East and Africa, Jinendra Sancheti, said that the move was part of TNT strengthening its position in emerging markets and providing an extensive network to support intra-regional and international trade growth.

Kenya was strategically positioned to offer the company major traffic flows linking Southern, Eastern and Central Africa, he noted. Africa has been identified as a major growth point for the company. “Kenya provides a business opportunity for the group and we shall continue investing in the market,” he added.

TNT Express has been operating in the Kenyan market since 1980 through Aircare Charters, which held the franchise. Other major players in the market include DHL, UPS, FedEx, One World, Sky Net and Globe Flight.
