Kenya: GTV Clients to Pay by Post

The Postal Corporation of Kenya transfers on average Sh400 million a month through its electronic money transfer services.

Postmaster General Fred Odhiambo said the corporation earns a net commission of Sh34 million a month from the service launched in November 2006.

He said the corporation charges between Sh17 and Sh25 for every transfer.

“This is our fastest growing business stream that continues to attract respected and strong brands in the market,” Mr Odhiambo said Wednesday, after signing a subscription payment agreement with pay television service, GTV.

On the subscription deal, which started on a pilot basis in November last year, the Postmaster General said GTV customers who pay through the post office have reached 300.

“The numbers are growing fast and, to date, we have collected nearly Sh1.9 million on behalf of GTV,” said Mr Odhiambo.

Under the agreement, GTV subscribers will pay their subscriptions through the corporation’s 200 PostaPay money transfer service outlets at no extra charge.

GTV Kenya general manager, Kibutha Nduati, said the deal was formed due to the need to provide more payment points for their subscribers.

Mr Nduati said GTV, which launched the country mid last year, is set to unveil four new channels to bring its total channels to 20.

24th UPU Congress to be held from 23 July to 12 August

The UPU International Bureau today confirmed the place and date of the 24th UPU Congress. It will take place at the Geneva International Conference Centre from 23 July to 12 August.
The next Universal Postal Congress was to be held in Nairobi. Given the situation in Kenya, the UPU Council of Administration decided by consensus to change the venue during its latest session in Berne.

UPU member countries have also been informed of the new deadlines for submitting Congress proposals. Proposals submitted until 22 March must be supported by at least two postal administrations, while those submitted after that date and until 22 May must be supported by at least eight postal administrations.

The date for applications for the posts of Director General and Deputy Director General of the International Bureau has now been set at 22 May.

The International Bureau has set up a Congress preparatory committee to organize the international meeting normally attended by some 1,500 delegates from the UPU’s 191 member countries.

24th UPU Congress changes location

Given the current situation in Kenya, the Universal Postal Union’s Council of Administration on Friday decided to change the venue of the 24th Universal Postal Congress from Nairobi, Kenya, to Geneva, Switzerland.
The UPU Congress was scheduled to take place in Nairobi from 13 August to 3 September 2008. The event attended by about 1,500 delegates from the UPU’s 191 member countries will now take place in Geneva from mid-July to early August; the exact dates remain to be confirmed.
A resolution adopted by the Council also recommends that Congress approve Kenya’s chairmanship of that Congress as well as the chairmanship of the UPU Council of Administration from 2009-2012. It will also recommend promoting Nairobi as the venue for the UPU Strategy Conference in 2010.
Kenya has not yet communicated its response to this resolution.
The UPU must hold a Congress every four years. The last one was held in Bucharest, Romania, in 2004. The situation in Kenya currently prevents the UPU International Bureau to work effectively with Kenya on continuing to organize a Congress in Nairobi. As a specialized agency of the United Nations, the UPU follows UN security rules. At the moment, the UN has implemented security phase II in Nairobi and phase III in the entire Rift Valley. As such, all non-essential UN missions to Kenya remain suspended.

DHL adopts 7-day rota to reduce delays (Kenya)

DHL Express Kenya has introduced weekend consignment deliveries to minimise delays.

The service will also see the company pick up and deliver shipments during public holidays.

DHL Express Country Services Manager, Rogers Sultani, said the service would cater for customers with urgent shipping needs.

“The service is in tandem with recent growth trends that prompted companies to serve their clients efficiently and on time,” said Mr Sultani.
Introduction of the service is also being seen as responding to the growing sophistication in customer needs.

The service will initially be available in Nairobi and later to be rolled out to other major towns. It will initially attract no additional costs to customers.

Mr Sultani told Business Daily the service is expected to take some pressure off the weekday deliveries. Previously, the international express industry in Kenya has been offering pickup and delivery services from Monday to Friday, with limited deliveries on Saturdays and none on Sundays.

The weekend service is expected to particularly benefit customers in the health, hospitality, architectural and academic sectors.

In addition, against the back drop of the introduction of the 24-hour clearance at the DHL Express Gateway facility at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport a year ago, the Weekend Express Delivery.

UPU: A good year for the Quality of Service Fund (QSF)

In 2007, the Quality of Service Fund (QSF) financed 75 projects, totalling 15.8 million USD, in more than 50 countries. This was the first time that the Fund, created in 2001, actually spent more money than it received. At its last meeting, in October, the QSF Board of Trustees adopted projects in China (system for translating and improving the delivery of international mail), Bangladesh (installation of X-ray detectors to improve mail security), Romania (mobile offices set up in rural areas) and other countries. A total of 21 very diverse projects amounting to 8.4 million USD were approved recently, including a regional project that will enable nine Latin American countries to set up a cost accounting programme.

The Board of Trustees also awarded certificates to Belarus, El Salvador, Fiji, Jordan, Kenya, Mozambique, Trinidad and Tobago and Uganda for achieving their QSF project objectives and improving postal service quality in their countries.

The QSF was created by the UPU to finance projects aimed at improving postal service quality in developing countries. All member countries, except for the least developed countries, contribute to the Fund through an increase in terminal dues payments.
