Latvian govt to talk with Latvijas Pasts and Lattelkom about electronic signature project

Latvian government ordered the secretariat of E-Affairs Minister Janis Reirs on Tuesday to launch negotiations with the state-owned Latvijas Pasts postal company and Lattelekom telecommunications company about the development of the electronic signature services.

The government wants to complete the talks in three months time and then decide which company to entrust with implementing the electronic signature project.

Pan-Baltic arrangement needed for co-operation with Dutch mail company

The Dutch mail company TPG Post International is not interested in cooperation only with the Latvian state-owned postal company Latvijas Pasts therefore the latter will urge other Baltic mail services to join in, said Latvijas Pasts director general Gints Skodovs. “The Dutch mail company is not interested in Latvia alone, it is interested in the entire Baltic region,” said Skodovs, who had met with TPG Post International management this week during the Latvian president’s visit to the Netherlands. He told BNS it had been agreed that Latvijas Pasts will arrange a meeting in Riga with participation of Estonian and Lithuanian mail companies in the coming months. Skodovs said Latvijas Pasts already was cooperating with one of TPG Post International subsidiaries, TNT Latvia, but on a small scale and this cooperation should be expanded in future.

Latvian Mail co may co-operate with Spain in goods distribution in Baltic Sea region

The state-owned mail company Latvijas Pasts (Latvian Mail) has successfully started negotiations with Spanish mail company Correos y telegrafos about distribution of goods in the Baltic Sea region. Latvijas Pasts director general Gints Skodovs told BNS that his company wanted to develop its services by taking up also logistics. It has been agreed with the Spanish company that they could send to Latvia goods which Latvijas Pasts would then distributed in the Baltic states, Sweden, Russia and Poland. Skodovs said for now the two parties had agreed on specific “homework” that needs to be done for practical implementation of the cooperation discussed during talks in Spain.

Latvian Postal Service plans EUR 15 mln investments for development

Latvia’s state -owned Latvijas Pasts postal service is planing to invest 10 million lats (EUR 15 mln) this year towards development. Latvijas Pasts director general Gints Skodovs said that around 5 million lats are expected to be spent on a new postal sorting complex at the Riga airport, set to be completed by July next year.
The company also plans to modernize its post offices numbering over 960.

Estonia's postal company "threatens" to open courier service in Latvia

If the Latvian postal company Latvijas Pasts fails to quickly develop its courier postal service network, the Estonian postal company has “threatened” to open its own courier service branches in Latvia, reported Latvijas Pasts.
Temporary CEO at Latvijas Pasts, Gints Skodovs, said that courier services are an opportunity for state postal companies to gain significant additional revenues, but seeing as Latvijas Pasts has not yet developed this sector enough, the situation is slowing development for the postal companies of neighboring Estonia and Lithuania. Skodovs said that it is crucial for postal companies to offer uniform services across the region, but Latvia is currently a blank space in this sense.
