Motorola Announces Integrated GPS Functionality for Market-Leading MC70 Enterprise Digital Assistant

Motorola Inc. today introduced a new version of its flagship MC70 mobile computer, featuring integrated Global Positioning System (GPS) capability. This new option of Motorola’s fastest-selling rugged mobile computer will allow organizations with field-based employees, such as postal companies, to track and manage dynamic, real-time tasking, as well as verify specific locations of activities and provide mobile workers with pinpoint navigation support to improve location-based productivity.

The MC70 has been widely embraced for its lightweight, ergonomic design and ability to withstand the rigors of everyday use in harsh environments. Protected against a variety of environmental risks, including frequent drops to concrete, and exposure to water, dust and extreme temperatures, the MC70 is optimized for both indoor and outdoor applications.

With over a quarter of a million MC70 devices being used by mobile workers each day, this device is already allowing enterprises to seamlessly connect their workers to their back office systems leading to increased productivity and customer service. Now with new location capabilities, Motorola’s MC70 is once again connecting people and products to information resources, and transforming businesses – making them more efficient and responsive to customers to gain a competitive advantage

The MC70 EDA delivers flexibility and global coverage with converged voice and data capture. Utilizing SIRF III technology, the MC70 GPS-enabled EDA will continue to provide feature rich functionality including barcode data and signature capture in addition to wide area connectivity with support for high-speed EDGE networks, wireless 802.11a/b/g networks and Bluetooth.

The GPS-enabled MC70 will be showcased in Barcelona at Post Expo 2007 and at the IT Convergence Show in Paris in October 2007. The MC70 GPS version will be available for sale worldwide in the first quarter of 2008.

On June 21, under the witness of President Nguyen Minh Triet and Minister of Posts and Telematics Do Trung Ta, the Vietnam Data Communications Company (VDC), a subsidiary of the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), signed an agreement with Motorola on the pilot implementation of WiMAX in Hanoi and HCM City.

Hermes implements Motorola equipment to improve delivery times

The wide range of functionality and features that the Motorola devices offered also played a crucial part in Hermes’ decision. One of the functions that it required on its new mobile computers was a 2D imager to enable drivers to read any kind of two-dimensional code, such as PDF417, Datamatrix or QR-Code, as well as barcodes. Motorola’s MC3090 not only allows this advanced data capture, but can also store high-resolution pictures of digital-camera quality. The Motorola devices can therefore be used to provide evidence of damaged shipments on site. Additional functionality allows customer signatures to be captured and displayed on the colour screen, as well as displaying other relevant information about the delivery.

Hermes operates in harsh environments and its mobile computers are subjected to considerable stress. The MC3090’s rugged design and IP54-rated sealing ensure continued use and uptime by protecting against dust, moisture and extreme temperatures. But even the most robust and reliable products require a maintenance plan and support strategy, given by the crucial role they play in the Hermes logistics system. To meet these needs, Hermes chose Motorola’s comprehensive support agreement, which helps to minimise down time through a next-day promise to exchange damaged devices with new ones.
Motorola, Inc. announced that Hermes Logistics Group, Germany’s largest independent logistics provider, is replacing its existing data capture system with 23,000 MC3090s mobile computers to help streamline the delivery process and improve delivery times. 8,000 of the devices from Motorola’s enterprise mobility business (formerly Symbol Technologies) have already been deployed at Hermes Hamburg operations, and the remaining 15,000 devices will be rolled out over the next two years. The devices were chosen by Hermes because of their robust yet ergonomic design that allows them to be used in even the most demanding environments. Motorola is also providing special service and maintenance as part of the project. The project is being led by Motorola’s Premier Solution Provider, PDS Entwicklungs- und Service GmbH, known as a specialist for mobility IT solutions. PDS has also developed and customized the system software.

Stocks gain on encouraging Motorola earnings

Better-than-expected profits from Motorola lifted Wall Street higher Monday as investors grew more optimistic that third-quarter earnings in general will be strong. The Dow Jones industrials rose nearly 90 points to a 16-month high.

Volume was light as the bond market was closed for Columbus Day and Japan’s financial markets were closed for a national holiday.

“It’s a bit of a surprise to see this much strength on a low volume day. You have to give credit to the Motorola numbers,” said Peter Dunay, chief market strategist at Wall Street Access, a New York-based brokerage firm.

But he added, “It’s really anticipation that’s driving the market. Most analysts are now expecting even more from earnings, which could put the market under pressure.”
