Logistics expert appointed new head of Nightfreight

A West Midland overnight delivery company has appointed a leading logistics industry figure as executive chairman.

Robbie Burns will combined the jobs of chairman and chief executive at Willenhall-based Nightfreight.

His appointment follows surprise departure in July of previous chief executive Steve Allen.

Mr Burns was founding chief executive of Exel Logistics and has held a number of board advisory roles at Tiphook Ryder, Tibbett & Britten and Hays.

He was behind the recent Burns Inquiry into freight taxes and foreign competition on behalf of industry bodies the Road Haulage Association and the Freight Transport Association.

John Aspin, who has been running the business since Mr Allen”s departure, will resume his position as a non-executive director with the Nightfreight group.

The company, which has been through two management buy-outs since 2001, announced in March that it was back in the black after a year of losses.

It posted pre-tax profits of GBP 4.1 million for the year to November 30 2006 compared with a loss of GBP 6.2 million the year before.

The company currently employs more than 2,400 staff at over 70 operating sites around the UK and operates in excess of 1,000 vehicles.

Nightfreight boss's surprise delivery

The boss of a major West Midland delivery company has quit unexpectedly, it was announced yesterday.

Steve Allen was said to have resigned as chief executive of privately-held Nightfreight to “pursue interests outside the group” with immediate effect.

The announcement came after Mr Allen pulled out of a planned interview with The Birmingham Post last Friday without giving a reason.

The Willenhall-based company, which has been through two management buy-outs since 2001, refused to expand on a short statement released yesterday.

Chairman Tim Redburn said: “Over the past 12 months Steve has been instrumental in implementing the group’s strategy which has resulted in good growth in difficult trading conditions.

“However Steve has taken the decision that, moving forward, the business would benefit from a more operationally-focused CEO – a decision the group has supported.”

John Aspin, a non-executive director, has taken over as chief executive “to maintain business continuity and ensure that it is ‘business as usual'”.

In March, the company, which employs more than 2,400 people at more than 70 sites around the UK, announced a 250 per cent rise in operating profit in 2006 to pounds 3.1 million on turnover 6.8 per cent ahead at pounds 8.4 million.

Nightfreight drives back into black

Specialist delivery business Nightfreight has forged back into the black – posting pretax profits of pounds 4.1 million for the year to November 30, compared to the previous year’s loss of pounds 6.2 million. The company yesterday said it had improved turnover by 6.83 per cent, up by pounds 8.4 million to pounds 131.9 million, while operating profits rose 250 per cent, up by pounds 3.1 million to pounds 4.38 million.

Nightfreight, which started life at Willenhall in 1984 and still remains headquartered there, said the improvements in its performance reflected the benefits of an ongoing investment programme in both customer service and operational developments. Steve Allen, chief executive, said: “Throughout 2006, the company has made good progress improving its financial performance and commencing its transition to becoming a logistics and solutions business, offering customers new integrated services that will meet their changing requirements.”

Nightfreight is currently owned by Royal Bank of Scotland.
