Gala awards celebrate strength of PalletForce network

PalletFORCE’s sixth annual Gala Awards Dinner on Saturday 12th April highlighted the strength of the Network, with a record number of Member Depots being recognised for their contribution.

Held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London and attended by 430 Shareholder Members and staff, the event rewarded the Network’s outstanding performers over the past year.

The event’s top prize, PalletFORCE Depot of the Year, was this year renamed as the PalletFORCE Depot of the Year – The Robert Bedford Award in honour of the Bedfords Transport Depot Principal and PalletFORCE Non-Executive Director, who died in 2007. The award was won by Edwin C Farrall & Sons for the fourth time.

Ge-Be Transport was voted Members’ Depot of the Year, whilst the Sales & Marketing Award was won by Owens Road Services. The Members Service Committee Award went to White Logistics.

A new category, Networkers of the Year, singled out twelve Member Depots who, in the opinion of the Network, had ‘shown a true Network spirit and had gone that extra mile’ over the past twelve months. Those chosen were Horley Road Services, UK Freight Masters, Alan Firmin Ltd, Freightforce, Online Roadways, JBT Ltd, White Logistics, Price Express Transport, Beattie Bros Transport, R G Bassett & Sons, John Jempson & Sons Ltd and Abacus Transport

Pallet-Track Leads With Innovation In Our Industry

With all the focus from the HSE that pallet networks are experiencing of late (Motor Transport 20th March). Pallet Track was pleased to announce to its shareholder members this week the introduction of a quality control department to monitor all aspects of the transhipment operation.

In the non-pedestrian environment of the sort areas where visiting line haul drivers are unable to supervise both the unloading and re-loading of their freight PT has invested a six-figure sum in the introduction of a completely independent team which reports solely to the daytime operations management.

The team will be responsible for supervising and reporting on the quality of the member (arrival vehicle), Pallet Track Fork-Lift truck drivers and management operatives during the sort process and ultimately the presentation of the loaded outbound trunk vehicle prior to departure back to the depot.

Easter 2008

Another ‘first’ in our industry sector was the foresight for Pallet-Track to fully prepare for the busiest week in the year by adopting an additional two sort operations.

Given the previous two years historic volume increases PT decided to add two Economy (48-hour) sorts on Wednesday and Thursday (19th & 20th March). The previous year had seen growth in volume spiral by over 32 pct on these two days, with the demand for next day (as opposed to economy) increasing from 65 to 85 pct.

A complete 68-depot sort operation was undertaken with an additional workforce of over 20 members of staff some of whom were office staff seconded to the sort process. Approaching 2,500 pallets were successfully transhipped during the two-day process which enabled the more time restrictive night operation to function efficiently. In total the combined sort operations handled over 9,500 pallets.

The result was that no delay was incurred by any network member which in turn helped all PT members customers receive their goods on time prior to the holiday period.

Nigel Parkes PT Managing Director comments:

“The whole project was a complete success, we had the element of experience and a willingness to make this ‘first’ succeed from the membership to our staff who both worked tirelessly during the night and day operations. It was an extra benefit for staff normally positioned elsewhere in the business to fully appreciate the hard work and attention to detail the operations team provides night in night out”

Palletways announces continued european expansion

The Palletways Group has announced a 19 pct increase in annual turnover for the 12 month period to 31st May 2007, with consolidated operating profit before amortisation of goodwill at GBP 2.9m, compared to GBP 2.8m the previous year.

Commenting on the results, Susan Hundleby, Palletways Group Finance Director, said: “The results reflect the continued expansion of the Palletways network and the planned investment to support this expansion to achieve its vision of being a truly European business.”

“The reporting period saw the successful transfer of the Palletways business model into the Spanish market. Key investments included rolling out a new central hub facility in Alcala de Henares, near Madrid, and enhancing interconnectivity between the domestic European networks.”

“This year also saw the beneficial acquisition and integration of Palletways Italia S.p.A. into the Group’s network. Palletways continues to develop its fully integrated and wholly controlled networks to provide domestic and European pallet distribution services. Pan-european deliveries made simple by Palletways

Palletways has enhanced and simplified its pan-European delivery service for small consignments of palletised freight.

An ‘On Line Scheduler’, an industry first, which provides the customer with lead time information before their consignment is despatched, has been also been launched by Palletways, which today has circa 250 depots across the UK and mainland Europe and handles some 20,000 pallets a day via nine hub facilities.

The company has also introduced a simple-to-use door-to-door pallet rate-card. In a four stage process customers can find which pallet(s) size is applicable to their consignment; check to see where their pickup postcode is in which country; decide on their destination postcode and its corresponding zone; and refer to the tariff tables to find their price.

Terry Morris, European Product Manager at Palletways Europe, said: “As the only dedicated pan-European pallet network provider, we’re experiencing ever increasing demand for our express delivery services on a much wider scale than ever before.

In addition, customers will be able to benefit from daily collections up to 17:00 and same day departures across the UK and mainland Europe.

Palletways’ enhanced pan European express delivery services are supported by multi-lingual customer support teams and a fully integrated IT infrastructure, which allows users to track and trace their consignments throughout the distribution process via the internet.
