GLS system now provides delivery status in real-time

At GLS, seamless parcel tracking has been a matter of course for years. At each interface, i.e. every time a parcel reaches or leaves a depot or vehicle, the individual parcel number is recorded with a scanning device. These status reports are transmitted to the GLS IT system, where they are made available to customers – via the Internet or telephone. Up until now, however, delivery information was transmitted to the system in the evenings when the driver returned to the depot. This has now changed. As of September, parcel tracking at GLS is now possible in real-time.

Delivery data is transferred directly “on tour” from the delivery vehicle. When the parcel is handed over to the recipient, the GLS driver utilises a handheld scanner to record both the parcel number and the consignee’s signature.

GLS thoroughly – and successfully – tested the mobile data transfer service at one of its subsidiaries. Based on these results, it is now implemented comprehensively throughout the entire group.

FedEx Express introduces Cork flight route

FedEx Express has introduced a new flight route through Cork to provide customers with improved next-business-day access to Continental Europe and the U.S. East Coast.
Customers in the South, South East and West of Ireland will benefit from pick-up times of up to one and one-half hours later on average than previously available and faster service to select destination markets, making FedEx Express the most competitive next-day service in the region. Customers who previously had two-business-day service to select U.S. markets will now be able to reach more than 3,500 zip codes along the U.S. East Coast overnight.

The flight, which originates in Shannon, will now connect through Cork to allow for regional pick-up for next-business-day delivery before proceeding to its onward destination, the FedEx Express hub at Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport. This additional flight segment represents an investment in Ireland’s economy by offering businesses improved service and greater next-day market access from more points within Ireland.

Registered and international mail makes up the balance. Ongoing quality monitoring by the International Postal Corporation (IPC) continues to show An Post reaching or exceeding the targets laid down for handling incoming and outgoing international mail.
