Pricing in proportion research

Postwatch, the watchdog for postal services, today releases research on Pricing in Proportion (PiP), Royal Mail’s new pricing structure.

The key findings are:

” 84 per cent of those interviewed were aware of PiP,

” 87 per cent of vulnerable customers (the elderly, rural dwellers and those on low income) believe they are paying more for their post following PiP’s introduction.

” 12 per cent of over 1000 items posted were charged incorrect postage;

Commenting on the research, Millie Banerjee CBE, Chair of Postwatch, said:

“Our research shows that Royal Mail’s huge effort to raise awareness and understanding of PiP has been successful but is potentially being undermined by some post offices failing to advise and charge customers correctly.

Shoppers must help post offices to survive

Tony Blair once said about the Post Office “use it or lose it”, meaning that if people stopped going to post offices they would have to close. What does annoy me is the amount of people who go to a post office for their pension or benefits, then go to a supermarket to buy their goods, even though the post office sells the essentials.

Tony Blair got rid of the pension book and introduced Post Office Card Accounts, then said it was only until 2010. It must have cost millions setting it all up, just to throw it aside. He went on to say that after 2010 people must have their pensions and benefits put into their bank accounts. As 30 per cent of people do not have a bank account, and no way of owning one, how are they going to manage miles from a town?

So he must either keep the card account or allow a private firm to take it over.

I saw in the paper that he was doing his bit to help the environment by replacing his light bulbs with environmentally friendly ones and turning his heating down? Why was it on in August?

Postcomm reviews Royal Mail request on notice period for changes to Sameday service

Postcomm is seeking views on Royal Mail’s application for an exemption from the notification requirements of its licence for changes to its Sameday service.

Condition 7 of its licence requires Royal Mail to notify Postcomm of any changes to existing prices and services three months before they are introduced and to publish information about such changes after this notification.

In October 2006, Royal Mail applied to Postcomm for an exemption from this requirement for changes to its Sameday service on the basis that this service operates in a competitive market.

It is important for Postcomm to get the views of other postal operators, postal users, Postwatch, trade associations and other interested parties operating in the postal service industry, and the regulator will carefully consider these views in making its decision on Royal Mail’s request.

Jobs go as Royal Mail centre axed

Almost 100 jobs are to go at a Royal Mail customer services centre in Essex.
The company has announced the office in Colchester will close with the loss of 97 jobs as part of plans to merge the service into six national centres.

A Royal Mail spokesman said voluntary redundancy or alternative roles in a different department would be offered to those whose jobs would be going.

The spokesman said services to customers would not be affected by the changes, due to be completed by March.

The move follows the end of Royal Mail’s monopoly of the postal industry, earlier this year, forcing it to deal with competitors.

Dutch TNT and UK Royal Mail in race for ABX Belgium Distribution

Dutch mail and express deliveries group TNT NV and UK rival Royal Mail are the two remaining bidders for ABX Belgium Distribution, Belgian De Tijd newspaper said on November 18, 2006.

The owner, Belgian railways SNCB/NMBS, aims to complete the deal within three weeks.

The EU competition authorities obliged NMBS to sell the unit by the end of 2006.

ABX Belgium Distribution is a market leader in the domestic parcel deliveries market. The unit has an annual revenue of 90 mln euro (USD 115.5 mln) and a 700-strong workforce. Furthermore, 650 trucks of third parties are running for the company.

ABX Belgium Distribution was earlier part of ABX Logistics Worldwide SA/NV (ABX), which was sold by NMBS to UK private equity firm 3i Group Plc and the management in August 2006. The deal included air cargo, sea cargo, customs, logistics and international transport activities of ABX Belgium.
