New results show significant increase in direct mail volumes for the travel and tourism sector

New figures today revealed that the travel sector has experienced a 7.8 per cent increase in direct mail volumes.

During the second quarter this year, volumes rose to 52.04 million, up from 48.28 million in the same period in 2005, revealed Royal Mail.

These strong results, reported between April and June 2006, are indicative of the yearly focus on driving summer holiday package sales. Direct mail is increasingly being used to drive response to brand marketing campaigns, resulting in the uplift in targeted direct mail. For example Virgin Holidays uses direct mail as a key part of its brand response campaigns, to increase sales of its US and Caribbean holiday destinations.

Interestingly, there has also been a significant lift in volume of direct mail sent to the 55-64 age bracket. This is a result of the marketing community identifying the ‘grey market’ as a responsive and valuable target audience.

New results show significant increase in direct mail volumes for the retail sector

New figures today revealed that the retail sector has experienced a 1.1 per cent increase in direct mail volumes.

During the second quarter this year, volumes rose to 88.91 million, up from 87.92 million in the same period in 2005, revealed Royal Mail.

These strong results, reported between April and June 2006, are indicative of the current retail climate. Footfall on the high street suffered dramatically during the World Cup and unusually hot summer weather, and increases of online purchases failed to meet the shortfall.

Furthermore, The British Retail Consortium’s Shop Price Index shows that prices are on the rise. August 2006 is the second month the inflation rate has shown a significant year on year increase (1.4 per cent). Much optimism is also predicted for the rest of the year, with Royal Mail’s new pricing structure (Pricing in Proportion) enabling retailers who post more than 90 per cent of their products to save money on two thirds of their mail on average; a saving which could then be re-invested into further direct marketing activity.

Companies that have relocated tend to be active buyers of a wide range of products and services – from office equipment to stationery, recruitment, advertising and financial services. According to research from the Directory Association, companies spend more in the first few months of moving than over the next five years and are seen as valuable sales prospects.

Royal Mail puts value at zero to calm share fears

Royal Mail is worth nothing, the organisation has told the Government and politicians, in an effort to take the political heat out of its push to give employees shares in the business.

The state postal service, in arguing that the Government effectively would be giving nothing away if staff were given shares, contends that the shares would also be worthless when they are issued.

Royal Mail has calculated that it is worth nothing because its assets, which are thought to be valued at about GBP5 billion, are cancelled out by its pen-sion deficit, which stands at GBP5.6 billion.

Royal Mail has told the Treasury and the Department of Trade and Industry that the group would be worth GBP4 billion by 2010-11, triggering shares worth GBP5,000 per employee.

It believes that it can build up from a zero balance to a GBP4 billion value through modernisation and increased productivity, which will come from giving staff an incentive through the share-ownership programme.
