Royal Mail media manager Roche quits after restructure

Royal Mail’s former head of media markets Richard Roche is leaving the company following the reorganisation of its sector marketing division. It emerged earlier this year that Roche had been left without a job after a restructure was called by Royal Mail’s marketing director Alex Batchelor. However, a spokesman said at the time that Roche was still with the company and he was said to be in the running to replace Gordon Steele as sales and marketing director of the Post Office. But it is now understood that Roche will leave at the end of this week. He has effectively been replaced by Antony Miller, although Miller takes up the newly created role of head of media development. A Royal Mail spokesman confirms Roche’s departure and points out that the media development team under Miller has doubled in size following the restructure.

UK Government 'could save Pounds 31m on post bill'

The public sector would save Pounds 31 million a year if it dropped Royal Mail in favour of rivals, sent some letters second class and used the internet more, the Government’s spending watchdog said yesterday. The finding by the National Audit Office (NAO), which examined how key departments handled their post, is a blow to Royal Mail. The postal group, which handles most public sector mail, is already losing key contracts as full competition takes its toll. The report also highlights the large quantities of mail sent by departments to incorrect addresses or people. The NAO found that the average cost of mail in the public sector is 28p an item, compared with 22p in the financial services industry.
The watchdog said that departments should also send more letters second class, use the internet more and manage their systems better.

Regulation `over-burdening UK Royal Mail`

The Royal Mail was over-burdened by parts of the regime regulating its services, according to an official report today. The National Audit Office (NAO) said there was scope to improve the way the regulations were implemented by Postcomm, which would reduce the burdens. These included cutting the length and detail of investigations into Royal Mail services, according to the report, Opening the Post. The study found that postal deliveries had been improving since regulation was introduced, although it singled out areas including North West London and South East London where target levels were not being achieved.
Sir John Bourn, head of the NAO, said: “The problem of regulating a monopoly such as Royal Mail is that it tends to involve advocacy, litigation and dispute.
“That is why competition is in the long run a less costly and burdensome way of protecting consumers. This report encourages Postcomm to minimise the costs and maximise the benefits in the short term while withdrawing from detailed regulation in the medium term.”
