Carriers Compete for Spanish Post Contract

On Friday the Spanish post office will award the 9.61m euro contract for night postal flights in 2003. Yesterday Alberto Nunez-Feijoo, chairman of the post office, announced that Air Europa, Spanair (which currently provides the service), Boreal, Farconi and Charter are competing for the contract. The contract involves aeroplanes from Santiago de Compostela, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Malaga and Vitoria flying to Madrid airport and back again. It complements the service which the post office provides using the space reserved on Iberia flights, and strengthens the surface distribution network. The Spanish post office is currently restructuring its distribution model.

A good year for parcels

In spite of the slowdown in the economy, GEE’s domestic parcel service managed to keep its growth rates constant in the last quarter, and its international service even exceeded the growth forecasts. The more recently launched services saw more rapid growth than the more traditional business segments. This was particularly evident in the case of shipments to the Canary Islands, ecommerce customers and Integral Logistics. There was a considerable increase in freight shipments to the Canary Islands with the introduction of several options. This was a response to customer requirements regarding delivery: sea options with
weekly shipments from Cadiz, and air service with daily flights from Madrid. In 2001 the new Tenerife and Lanzarote installations were opened which, together with the Las Palmas depot, guarantee full coverage of the Canary Islands.

Spain's Correos mulls 48 mln Eur buy of SCH's Parcel Service Co

State-owned postal operator Correos y Telegrafos is mulling the acquisition of a parcel service company to strengthen its position in the sector, Cinco Dias reported, citing unnamed sector sources.
According to the newspaper, Correos is currently in advanced talks to buy Banco Santander Central Hispano SA unit Servipack, in a deal worth some 48 mln eur.
