Arab countries agree to start money transfer exchanges

In Geneva to attend the 24th Universal Postal Congress, the postal leaders of Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Qatar, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen signed an agreement that will see them start exchanging money transfers electronically.
As with other regional projects, the money transfer service relies on the UPU’s IFS application and international financial network.

Launched by the Arab League and implemented by a regional steering committee chaired by Emirates Post, the project, also supported by the French Post, will allow the postal operators involved to exchange money orders on a multilateral basis from now on.

The new service furthers the UPU’s efforts to improve access to secure and reliable money transfer services through formal channels for rural populations, and especially for migrant workers.

Explains Emirate Post’s Nasser Fathi Sadiq Qaddoumi, Chairman of the steering committee: The multilateral agreement is giving the Arab region – with some countries in Asia and others in Africa – a push to provide better services to migrant workers. For example, more than 80 pct of the United Arab Emirates population of 5.8 million people consists of foreigners, and the situation in other Gulf countries is not much different, says Qaddoumi.

Other Arab countries said they would join the regional network by the end of this year.

A similar regional project is expected to start next week with countries from North Eastern Africa.

General debate sets tone for UPU Congress

Decision-makers from the international community today participated in a high-level general debate during the 24th Universal Postal Congress. Themed “The postal sector, an essential component of the global economy”, the debate gathered stakeholders from the larger postal sector.

The World Trade Organization stressed the crucial role infrastructures such as postal services play in international trade. For the International Monetary Fund, the postal sector has a considerable impact on the reduction of trade costs. For its part, the World Bank noted the importance of money transfer services for migrants, adding that postal operators were in a unique position to offer such services so essential to development. The Russian Post said postal networks could work with banks to offer additional services and increase their revenues.

eBay International noted the role of postal services in the distribution of millions of items bought online annually. However, many online shoppers still hesitate to order goods from abroad. Only 20 pct of goods purchased on eBay sites cross borders. Citing high shipment costs and a need for improved quality of service, eBay urged postal operators to find solutions to these issues.

The Tunisian Post showed how the Government has made postal services part of a national policy to promote the information society by using the Post as a trusted intermediary in the electronic world and as a facilitator of e-commerce. On a regional level, the African Union expressed its desire to integrate postal services in its regional infrastructure development plan, as it does with water, electricity, telecommunications and transportation.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) finally invited the postal sector to take part in a worldwide awareness campaign on environment challenges. Thanks to an agreement signed in April between the UPU and UNEP, postal operators will work together on greening the postal sector.

Mory Group strengthens its positions in North Africa

In order to strengthen its position in North Africa, Mory Group –which is already managing a logistics warehouse in Tunisia- just opened a new warehouse located in Casablanca, Morocco.

The Governor of the Moroccan King as well as numerous local officials was there, in order to inaugurate with the CEO Alain Beau, on the 14th of June, this new tool which is at the state of the art.

It is a real bet on future that is done today, which becomes reality trough the opening of additional 10,000 square meters. This customs-friendly warehouse allows Mory Group to offer its customers (from the textile industry, as well as pharmaceutical and automotive ones) services such as accustoming, transit and goods moving.

Mory Group thus offers its customers, through its Mory LDI subsidiary, a global offer, in the scope of an integrated network, which will guarantee to pursue the 30 to 40 pct growth from latest years.

UPU philately workshop reviews new concepts

The need for involving the youth in philatelic activities and adopting new technology for producing stamps were among the topics highlighted at a four-day UPU workshop on philately hosted by Emirates Post at the Emirates Post Training &Development Centre.

The workshop, in which 19 countries from the Arab Permanent Postal Commission (APPC) took part, introduced the participants to new trends in philately. Experts from the UPU, La Poste, Tunisia Post and the Slovak Post were among those who made presentations.

At a concluding ceremony, Mr. Mohamed Bahlul, Director of Philately, Tunisia, said the first UPU level workshop on philately in the region threw light on a host of important philatelic issues and this will help regional philatelic organizations to raise their standards.

Mr. Louis Virgile, Cultural and Commercial Director, La Poste, France, who presented a paper on personalized stamps, said the participants showed good knowledge of philatelic topics and stressed that more such workshops need to be conducted in the Middle East and Africa region to boost philately.
