Royal Mail boss quits 'Leighton's Boys' club'

Gillian Wilmot, managing director at Royal Mail, said yesterday that she was leaving the postal organisation because there was no longer a suitable role for her there. Sources close to Mrs Wilmot said yesterday that she had found the management team, chaired by Allan Leighton, to be “a boys’ club”. Mrs Wilmot arrived at Royal Mail two years ago and was responsible for both the business and consumer markets of the mail delivery business, which is worth over pounds 4 billion. Her arrival was hailed as heralding a new era for the predominantly male management team.

Bulk of First-Class Post to be moved by road

Royal Mail is to scale down dramatically its use of trains to transport first-class post in a move that could cost Britain’s biggest railfreight company millions of pounds.

Royal Mail wants boss for christmas

Troubled postal service Royal Mail expects to name its new chief executive before Christmas. The state-owned organisation revealed the news as it stayed tight-lipped over a report that the managing director of Atherstone-based parcel carrier TNT, Alan Jones, was on a shortlist to become its new chief executive.

Royal Mail said its chairman Allan Leighton had targeted four potential candidates for the job, but declined to say who they were. A spokeswoman said: ‘Mr Leighton has said publicly that he has about four people on a shortlist, but we don’t know any more than that.’
