Post office closures `Ripping heart from communities'

The Government is ripping the heart out of rural and urban communities by allowing the wholesale closure of thousands of post offices, the Liberal Democrats said today.

As tens of thousands of countryside campaigners took to the streets of London fighting for rural rights, MPs and councillors took to the stage at the Liberal Democrat conference in Brighton to call for an end to the closure of post offices.

With the proposed closure of 3,000 post offices in urban areas, MPs David Heath (Somerton and Frome) and Vincent Cable (Twickenham) said it was time the Government listened to the protests.

Securicor to collect 1bn pounds Post Office deal

Securicor is set to win a major contract, worth up to 1 billion pounds, to deliver cash and stamps to Post Offices, it was announced today.

The company has been selected by postal services group Consignia as its preferred supplier of cash management and transportation services throughout the UK.

Consignia currently employs 3000 workers and has 700 vehicles in its cash-handling operations but has been looking to outsource services as part of its drive to cut costs.

TDG ready to open returns centre

Logistics provider TDG will launch a ‘reverse logistics’ service in spring 2003 to manage the return of consumer goods- faulty or wrongly ordered items, of end-of-life products. The objective is “recapturing value or proper disposal”.
The “full returns solution” will deal with returns from homes and stores, and to cope with them TDG is building a returns centre in Derby- the first of many, according to product development director Phil Roe. This is “an rdc in reverse”, sorting goods and grading them for resale, refurbishment, recycling or disposal. The more specialist tasks will be outscored.
