Early mail bid a huge failure

A ROYAL Mail experiment to charge businesses for early postal deliveries has flopped, with just one firm out of 36,000 agreeing to pay the pounds 10-a-week fee.
The result came from the first of 14 nationwide trials – cutting out the second post – which was launched in Plymouth, Devon, three weeks ago.
And yesterday, Gary Hepburn, of mail watchdog group Postwatch, predicted the Royal Mail would be lucky to get more than one business in the whole country to pay up.

Deutsche Post to Enter British Letter-Delivery Market

German postal services and logistics giant Deutsche Post AG is continuing its rapid expansion in Europe.
A spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday that the company expects to be granted a license before the end of this month, allowing it to enter the letter-delivery market in Britain. “But we don’t have the license yet,” she cautioned.
A British license would take effect immediately. It would initially allow Deutsche Post to make 40 million letter deliveries a year – around half the volume currently handled by Britain’s state-owned Royal Mail service, recently renamed Consignia.
People close to Deutsche Post in Bonn said that the aim was to eventually obtain a full, long-term license for the British market.

Dutch TPG shows Post Office just how to deliver the goods

LESS than a week after the Post Office admitted that it might need a government bail-out or commercial loan, its Dutch rival TPG Group has announced a profit of Eu460m ( pounds 289m) for its first half. Yesterday, Peter Bakker, chief executive of TPG, said the company had had a “satisfying half-year” despite declining mail in the Netherlands because of the poor economic environment. TPG, which owns the TNT Express mail group, is an Amsterdam-listed company with global ambitions. The group has applied for an interim licence to operate in the UK market, and under the terms of this licence would handle 20 million items of bulk mail in the UK. It is hoping, ultimately, for a full licence and Mr Bakker said yesterday that the company was working on its UK mail strategy and would reveal it in the fourth quarter of this year.

Consignia backs down over small business charges

Consignia has backed down over its plan to charge small businesses and householders £14-a-week to receive their post before 9am.
The company announced plans to level the charge for an early delivery to those receiving less than 20 letters a day, meaning that SMEs would be faced with paying an extra £728 a year.
Instead, Consignia will now widen its pilot projects to see if it can deliver small volumes of mail before 9am for under £14-a-week.

Parcelforce Worldwide are trialing a home shopping delivery alternative

B2C delivery could take a step into the future with new ‘failed delivery’ trials being run by Royal Mail, Parcelforce Worldwide and Nottingham City Council. If the trials are successful it could not only give the post and parcel operators the competitive edge in the UK market, but also the psychological lift the companies have been looking for.
In an innovative new venture, Royal Mail and Parcelforce Worldwide are trialing services aimed at putting an end to the ongoing problems of failed delivery. The project, named ‘Not-In-Home’, is being run in conjunction with Nottingham City Council, and is likely to include over 40,000 residents in the area.
