Consignia's Universal Bank Opens April 2003

The Post Office-based Universal Bank will be open for business in April 2003 even though the executive in charge, Basil Larkins, has resigned, the Department of Trade and Industry insisted yesterday. Mr Larkins resigned in May for personal reasons, but insiders insist that the Universal Bank is still on track and will be operational when the Government changes the way it pays benefits next April.

UK Post Office to charge for pre-9am delivery

The Post Office has announced that it plans to charge £14 per week for customers who wish to receive their mail before 9.00 am, according to a report on the BBC 6.00 pm news. The Post Office will be carrying out a pilot scheme of the new charges for deliveries in certain areas from next week, it said.

Colt Cars extends logistics agreement with EXEL

EXEL operates a fleet of 20 vehicles from five distribution centres, and claims it will be offering an enhanced integrated next day delivery service to Mitsubishi’s dealer network. Mitsubishi Motors UK general manager of parts John Rose said: “This new efficient service will serve to reduce the amount of time a car spends off the road, which will inevitably benefit both customers and our dealers.”

Postcomm proposes clearer rules for exceptions to the universal postal service

On 9 July Postcomm announced a set of rules for deciding when Consignia does not have to make daily deliveries to particular addresses. Consignia has a legal obligation to provide a universal postal service of deliveries six days a week to every home or premises in the UK, subject only to exceptions which were determined by Postcomm under provisions in Consignia’s licence.

Parcelforce drivers go solo

Parcelforce, the heavily loss-making parcel wing of Consignia is offering more employees the chance to become self-employed owner-drivers as part of its far-reaching restructuring and cost-cutting drive. Successful trials at a number of depots, including Milton Keynes, Aldershot and Leeds, have persuaded Parcelforce to extend the scheme.
