Mail contractor 'Dumped millions of letters in landfill'

MILLIONS of letters and other items due to be delivered by the Royal Mail have been buried in landfill sites or discarded in rubbish skips.

Scotland Yard confirmed yesterday that it is investigating a mailing company for allegedly dumping hundreds of mail bags with household rubbish. Five people have been arrested and released on bail.

The company had been paid to transfer post from client organisations to the Royal Mail but detectives believe that clients were being charged for mail they never passed on, and that this was post which they believed nobody would miss, such as magazines and direct mail. It was then allegedly loaded into skips and dispatched to rubbish tips.

Royal Mail Retracts Fee for Early Delivery

The Royal Mail yesterday staged an embarrassing climbdown over its plan to charge small businesses and householders £14 a week for early delivery of their post after its chairman said he had not been told about the scheme. Allan Leighton, chairman of Consignia, which is to revert to its Royal Mail name by the end of the year, said the postal service would now widen pilot projects to see if it could economically deliver small volumes of mail before 9am at £5 and £10, as well as £14, a week. The charges would have hit relatively small users of the mail. Anyone receiving an average of more than 20 letters a day would not be charged.

Mail rate plan condemend by post watchdog

Postwatch has attacked Royal Mail over its controversial plan for a new pricing system, branding it both complicated and unnecessary.

Peter Carr, chairman of Postwatch, says: “This is the wrong route. Royal Mail should be buying machinery that processes the larger items that customers wish to send.

Business Post Chairmans AGM Statement

At the AGM today of Business Post Group plc, one of the UK’s leading express delivery companies, the Chairman, Peter Kane, issued the following update on current trading and prospects:

“I am pleased to report an encouraging start to the financial year. Parcel revenues in the three months ended 30 June 2002 were 14% ahead of the equivalent period in the prior year. In addition to the impact of the contract with FedEx, which commenced in September 2001, revenues also benefited from strong levels of new business and improved levels of customer retention, more than offsetting the effects of the turnover lost following the collapse of Tiny Computers at the end of January 2002.
Our strategic investments, notably in our franchise network and our newer and smaller businesses (HomeServe, International, UK Today and UK Mail), have increased our costs, as expected. However, our cost base remains tightly managed, service performance levels remain very high and, as a consequence, our overall results to date are in line with plan.
