Post Office managers jeer Hewitt's vision for network sub postmasters conference

Patricia Hewitt was jeered by post office managers yesterday as she outlined the government’s vision for the network.
Officials said the trade and industry secretary was “pretty furious” at what she felt was the “blatant grandstanding” of her hostile reception at the National Federation of SubPostmasters conference in Bournemouth. But delegates were angered by what they saw as her failure to give assurances on future incomes for the beleaguered urban post office network.
Ms Hewitt was defended by Allan Leighton, Consignia’s chairman, in a rousing speech that won praise and a standing ovation.

Business Post delays delivery of rival service

A private postal company has been forced to delay for six months the introduction of a service to compete with Consignia after failing to reach agreement with the state-owned firm over the cost of doorstep deliveries.
Now Business Post has asked the independent industry regulator, Postcomm, to intervene and impose a tarrif on the two parties. Shares in Business Post fell 5% to 428p despite the company yesterday announcing a 19% surge in pretax profits to £15.1m for the year to March 31.

P&O looks set to quit logistics

P&O confirmed last week that the contract logistics arm of P&O Trans European (P&OTE) is up for sale, after its financial adviser, Rothschilds, approached at least one unnamed private equity company about the purchase.
The move surprised many analysts who observed that contract logistics had been P&OTE’s best performing division over the last few years.
The decision came after senior management concluded that the group does not have the resources to fund the future development of both its logistics and ports divisions.

Business Post announces 18.9% increase in pretax profit

Business Post, one of the UK’s leading express delivery companies, announces an 18.9% increase in pre-tax profit to £15.1 m for the year ended 31 March 2002. In a subdued economic environment, the increase in operating profit margins to 11.1% from 9.9% was a particularly pleasing result.

Second post axe delayed

Plans to scrap the second post have been shelved until next month at the earliest. Trials at 14 Royal Mail offices across the country were due to start this spring in a effort to slash costs and boost efficiency. But ailing postal group Consignia has been hit by a series of long-running disputes over pay. Now the contentious move, affecting 100,000 customers, has been pushed back until June.
