Post Office deal to hit A&L profits

Alliance & Leicester, owner of Girobank, has admitted that next year’s arrival of the Universal Bank will knock a hole in its profits.

Girobank processes £1 billion in notes and coins each week for the Post Office, which will administer the new Universal Bank. At present, the Post Office uses its 17,500 branches to pay out this money each week to pensioners, as well as operating basic bank accounts for the less well off and those on benefits.

La Poste emphasises that the success of their new organisation is only possible with the co-operation of their employees and their representatives and that this new organisation must take account first and foremost of the human aspect.

Canada Post; Private-Sector Interference

In May 2001, government-owned Canada Post acquired 50 per cent of Montreal’s Intelcom Courier for $1 million. This company offers same-day courier service to businesses and individuals.

Canada Post is now planning to increase its presence and establish same-day courier services in cities across Canada. John Caines, a company spokesman, recently told the media that the expansion of the Crown corporation into same-day courier service is “where we’re going,” and they do not plan to back down from this strategy.

Deutsche Post to buy another 23% in DHL

Deutsche Post World Net AG is planning to acquire by the end of this year an additional 23% stake in express carrier DHL for €400m, the Financial Times Deutschland reported, without citing sources.

It said the transaction has already been agreed by the owners of the stake, an Asian investment fund and a fund unit of WestLB, and will leave Deutsche Post with a stake of 98.6% in DHL.
